first off, i have searched the forum as well as on google for a diagram that can help me. if i'm blind and didn't find info that's already on here, i apologize. i have a 57 f100 with a 223 straight six that has been converted to 12volt negative ground. when i got it, it had the original generator and regulator setup that seemed to be working fine. after driving it around the neighborhood it suddenly stopped charging. i work at a parts house, so i bought a alternator and voltage regulator for a 64 F100 with a 223. i made new brackets and got everything installed. i am at the wiring stage and need help! i have the ignition run straight off the battery, through the key switch, and back to the coil. the truck starts and runs just fine as is, but obviously the battery will eventually lose charge. i am only concerned with wiring the alternator and regulator so that it is recharging the battery.

The voltage regulator has 4 terminals: "I" "F" "S" and "A". I understand that the "BAT" terminal on the alternator runs to the "A" terminal on the regulator, that the "FLD" terminal on the alternator runs to the "F" terminal on the regulator, and the "STR" terminal runs to the "S" terminal on the regulator. And also that the alternator and regulator both need to be grounded. With that being said, i have run across countless diagrams that use the "I" terminal on the regulator to run power to the ignition. I already have my ignition circuit run straight off of the battery so.... my question is this: how do i run power to the battery in order for it to recharge? do i use the "I" terminal to run a wire out to the positive side of the battery? or solenoid? or do i run another wire from the "A" terminal on the regulator to the battery? i am lost here. this is my first attempt at this alternator conversion, and i am a wiring rookie. any help would be much appreciated... thanks in advance

I'm not a whole lot of help here, but I think the "I" terminal is for indicator (ALT/GEN light). I know that's what it's for on newer Ford regulators. As for the rest of the wiring, I'd try to get my hands on an old Motors or Chiltons manual that covers 1964 models. They usually explain the layout/wiring of the various charging systems (GM, Ford, Chrysler)in a seperate section in the book.

54nomore: thanks for the help. I ended up figuring it out. The "S" terminal on the regulator needs to be fed positive juice from the on position of the keyswitch. Apparently the "STR" terminal on the alternator would have been run to an automatic choke. Thanks again.
