Working on the transmission out of my 61 F100 and I am unsure what it came out of originally. Tag reads HEF G 037136, 3 speed top loader (If anyone has any way of decoding that or giving me any specifics that would be great, TIA). I pulled it because when I bought the truck "first gear was out", the shift tabs wouldn't move, and the driveshaft was in the bed. I have since gotten it to shift through all the gears by hand, and nothing internally is over worn or broken. I did realize that the input/output seals were shot so I am guessing someone ran it out of oil and never truly diagnosed it.

I picked up a generic RAT/RAN/HEF gasket/seal kit and quickly realized it was a crapshoot. So far the input bearing retainer and tail housing gaskets look to fit, the output seal will work, and I was able to source the correct input shaft seal based on dimensions.

When I pulled the output housing I found the 3 remaining pieces of my speedometer drive gear. I put it together enough to see that it appears to have 6 teeth? My main question is about how it indexes on the output shaft. There is a hole in the shaft that looks like maybe a detent/pin of some kind sits in there and the corresponding slot on the inside of the drive gear aligns with it to fix it on the shaft. If that is the case is there anywhere to find that pin?

    Thanks! PXL_20231215_170850434.MP.jpg PXL_20231217_200604477.jpg

I believe that there is a bearing ball that fits in the hole in the shaft, and there should be a "U" shaped groove milled part way through the gear to match it.

  3. Yup, Beanscoot is right. Ball bearing drops in the hole in the shaft, slide the gear on and secure with snap ring.

Awesome guys, thanks for the info. I was worried it was going to be some obsolete special sized pin that I was going to have to get turned down lol. Appreciate it

  5. So, who has a link to the needed replacement drive gear?

That would be awesome, or any tips for something that would work. It looks like there was a change in 63 do a reverse direction of what I pulled out, but how do I determine what I need?
