Sorry in advance for the long post, but some advice or ideas would be helpful. I don't know what I'm doing anymore.

I have a 1964 f100 with a 292 y-block, 2 barrel carb and a 3 speed. She was a good daily driver up until about 1.5 years ago. My starter died on me, and took me about 6 months to find a new replacement. So for those 6 months she sat. Then I got her fixed and i could only drive her for about 20 or 30 minutes before she would just stop working for no reason. I assumed carburetor problems, but i couldn't find a rebuilt/replacement carb in my price range and i didn't have the time to rebuild it myself. So she sat again. Then some other things in my life came up, and she sat longer, about another 8-9 months. Then about a month ago or so I decided to finally get back to working on here, so i started meddling with the carb and I noticed when i tried to start her up she was leaking gas all over the engine. So I automatically assumed this was the problem and start messing with the carb, specifically the idle adjustment screws. If I tighten them down the carb doesn't leak any gas, but it also doesn't run at all. Now I can find anywhere to get the truck to idle, but that might be due to the old gas.

Also, recently i read a post on a message board (maybe this one) that described a problem with the coil on those engines. If the coil was old or shot, when it gets hot, it would cause the engine to cut off. So I replaced my coil.

Now, I believe the initial problem was the coil. Since the truck has been sitting for so long, I think the gaskets have deteriorated and that explains or the carb leak.

I'm not real sure. Any suggestions? I don't really want to spend 200$ on a new carb. It looks like thats the only way though.

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Dave

  2. Leaky carb leads to firey truck. Rebuild the carb first. Set idle screws 1-1/2 turns out to begin with. Drain gas tank. Check for dirt. Clear the fuel line of debris. Change or add a fuel filter. Drive and enjoy.

I don't really know anything but this is what I usually do and it works for me. While you're throwing money around, how are the points, plugs, wires, cap, etc.?

Pop for the coil too. It will probably let you sit sooner or later.

Dave; i'm thinking you need to troubleshoot a little more accurately; you seem to be hitting on several different things at once expecting one to cure all. slow down; make a check-off list and be thorough. coil, condenser, points, plugs, wires; fuel pump, lines, filter, pickup tube, tank; try borrowing a known good carb if yours is out of whack; a set of carb mounting gaskets won't kill you. an engine is like any other engine; they all need air, gas, and spark to run.

(and YES i've loaned a carb out AND borrowed one...)

good luck and DON'T GIVE UP!

From the info you have posted, it sounds like you have opened a bag of worms and dont have a clue.

Tightening the idle screws to stop a leak?

It sounds like your truck has been seriously neglected and therefore will need many repairs.

    Learn and apply basics.
    Every basic there is.
If you are young or unknowledgeable, maybe find an old car club with someone knowledgeable to mentor you.
    Maybe read repair manuals.

It sounds like you need to start by checking the tire pressure and every thing possible to check and then you may be qualified to drive it.

6 months to find a starter? I am not making fun of you but every town has a starter rebuild shop.

1.5 yr old gasoline won't burn for shit. If you have gas coming out of the carb it could be as simple as a stuck float, caused by the shitty gas. Messing with idle jets only stops leaks by coincidence.

Do what Catus1 says, rebuild card, absolutely drain the tank, old gas that old really
wont mix with new gas very well, ask me, how I know. Next comes the electrical system, plugs, points, condenser and a new cap and rotor, might as well put in a new coil, it'll go go soon anyway. Don't forget to check the timing. Make sure that the distributor is working properly, some of them are pretty bad. I assume that you also plan on changing the oil and filter. That should get it running.
