Projects Fabric

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 46international, Nov 5, 2016.

  1. where is a good place to get fabric for interior panels like around the rear of a tudor sedan? not vinyl and not a tweed, not sure about velvet. something more like a mohair.

  2. Google "SMS Fabrics"

  3. I just got some pretty nice samples of interior fabrics from LeBaron-Bonney for the 30 Plymouth I'm restoring for a client. There's also Cartouche specializing in Ford upholstery.

That's almost a loaded question. Hard to get cloth for a reasonable price if you want something that looks authentic. Proper wgt is important too, with most "organic" cloths like cotton and wool if it's too thin it will ball up easy with even minor use. Wool fabrics run close to $90/yd these days. Many synthetics look synthetic with glossy fibers and patterns. This is not to say it's impossible, just be patient and think it through. LeBaron Bonney has a catalog with all of their cloth offerings, some on close out, some with pretty trick looking postwar patterns from the late 40s to the late 50s. In most cases their catalogs are free. Another try, hit some old established trim shops in your area. I you're in Maryland so there should be a few within reasonble driving distance. Most shops are happy to shed unwanted or obsolete fabric. I bought a headliner from these folks for my 39 Ford Tudor, I'm pretty happy with what I got and really happy with the price. The only ones who had the color I wanted in a cloth that didn't look too modern.

Good luck and don't rush into it.

There must be upholstery supply shops near you. They are all over the country. Look in Yellow Pages or web search. There are lots of places that cater to little mom and pop upholstery shops, they won't mind selling you enough fabric for one job and they offer other products and services.

  8. You know, I did not even think about any upholstery shops, guess I'm addicted to the internet.
Highlander, it does not have to be authentic, and won't even get much wear as it is going to be just the rear panel around the rear window. And you are right about the glossy thing, I do want to stay away from that.
wbrw32, I checked them out and have a sample coming. Thanks

Upholstery shops usually have remnants of unknown age left over that will be limited to previous jobs and sample books to look at.
For the widest range of current offerings companies like SMS, LeBARON-BONNEY etc. are a good bet.

Figure out how to best describe what you want and run a search on ebay. I found some cloth very close to the original pattern of my '52 Plymouth for about $15/yard, and it had a significant wear rating, something like 50,000 rubs. It took me a few days to find out that the fabric was described as a "ticking stripe", but one I used that description, I found several options. Also, I have not seen one seller on Ebay that would NOT provide a sample, most of them were free, or, at most, $1.

  13. Just a warning on SMS they are notorious at getting out samples right away and taking forever to ship what you actually order.

This is the kind of outfit that Rusty O'Toole mentioned in post 7. They are where the upholstery shops buy their materials. http://tedcoindustries.com/ This one is in Baltimore.

  15. Thanks all for the help, I went up to Jo Ann Fabric and found something that will work out just fine.
    Thanks again.
