   What is the factory backspacing on a 54 chevy? Are there known clearance issues with the fatman dropped uprights and steering arms? The tie rod rubbs the tire.

   9/16" offset. With a 5" wheel, that's 3-1/16" backspacing, correct?

   no, you forgot to add the width of the rim flange...which is about 1/2" each side.
