I am replacing all the lamps in my dash and came across one just hanging. The lamp socket is made with a couple of clips on the side and it is open on one side like it would light something like an ash tray, but no spot there for it. It is molded to the same wire that powers the cigarette lighter. I wonder if maybe a new lighter was put in at one time and the light was for it. The odd part is that the light is tied to ignition, not the dash light circuit.

  2. My guess would be the glove compartment lamp if it's got another wire going to a switch on the glove compartment door. Unless maybe it's a courtesy lamp that lit up the floor, then it might have a ground lead leading to the switches in the door jambs.

  3. If the light is powered by the ignition switch and only powered when the ignition switch is on, it might be a dummy light for the alternator or an oil pressure dummy light, or maybe a parking brake warning light (to let you know that you left your parking brake on).

If it's powered by the cigarette lighter or courtesy lamp fuse though, it would get power all the time, and then it's probably either a glove box lamp or courtesy lamp.

    Good luck.

Heater control housing for the Deluxe heaters had a light. Standard didn't (at least on my '60-'63 style).
    High-beam indicator?
    Idiot lights?
If the harness is out of a bigger truck, it could be the overspeed indicator for the governor, or the tandem axle lock indicator.

I'm not being a dick, but this is exactly why I always tell people to get a factory shop manual for every old vehicle they own. It's the crap like this that only takes a second to look up, making those books worth their weight in gold.

New ones are pretty spendy (like $45 for the '60, plus the supplement covering '61-'62). I was patient and found an original on ebay, in perfect shape with no smudges or staines, perfect binding and no torn pages, for $6.95 plus shipping.

good suggestion Brad. I snagged a 66 truck shop manual supplement for free, and a while back I scanned the wiring diagrams for someone....I'll email them if you send a PM

normally dash lights are gray wires connected to the light switch. That's what the heater switch light and ignition switch lights would be.
