I just bought a 64 7/8 more door Fairlane 500. It's gonna be my stepsons first car that we are building over the next year. I need some advice. 289/auto, want to do a little performance upgrade, lowered, disc brakes, and add power steering. Need places for parts and suggestions on things that you've done that have been improvements without going wild. Thanks in advance ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1455667208.657785.jpg

Correct that? Just say it's a '64. That's the cut off year on here...Phony I.D. still works...

65 is the cut off year.
If its going to be his first car a tune up should do just fine on the engine part.

A lot of the running gear parts will interchange with the early Mustangs. No shortage of those parts. Good Luck

Recognize the fact that you either have a 5 bolt 289 or a 6 bolt bell housing 289 before moving to far.
Knowing what you have helps to negate the path to what fits what and/or as to how limited you are to drive train upgrades.

If y0u do have a 5 bolt 289 and you are not worried about the numbers matching bullshit,
Then swap it out for an 1985 1/2 to 1987 Mustang or Ford 302 with it's early automatic overdrive.

You can probably find a complete well running vehicle for minimal money and take the 5.0 roller cammed engine/tranny, turf the EFI intake in favor of carb/intake and motivate your "65" while increasing mileage. -All your 289 pulleys, brackets and accessories should bolt in place of a serpentine belt if you wish. A special brass gear is needed to use your points distributor with the newer roller cam. Gear is less than $20..
The 5 bolt 289 and tranny may have some value to those that are concerned with show points at the concurs de elegance ala beach.

    upgrade brakes, seat belts, etc

  9. invest in a Fairlane Club or America membership. There is so much info there. There is also a parts seller on the east coast with tons of parts. Most all those questions your going to have have already been answered there.
