Who could fall asleep to this? I thought about heading out to my garage, streaming it through a sound system up loud, and having a bit of a nap. But then I thought the neighbours might think I've gassed myself!
Thats a long rumpety Rump 60 minute idle. Sound good but I’d love to hear some high revs to keep me from going into REM sleep.
When I was a kid in high school I bought a reel to reel tape recorder. I took it out to the garage and recorded me revving up my '40 Ford flathead at normal recording speed. Then I played it back at full volume at double speed for the neighborhood to enjoy. Probably sounded like a stock 265 Chevy but I thought it sounded like a dragster.
Or if gas isn't quite enough, then maybe the sound of a nitro-burning Flathead on a continuous loop..... MUST HEAR engine sound Pre War Nitro burning flathead 1932 AV8 Ford hot rod race car - YouTube
It's purring. Cracks me up. Soothing meditative sounds for hot rodders. LOL Hey... BTW... What did we just say about letting an engine idle? Hahaha
I always thought a Ford flathead at idle sounded like an inboard boat; the exhaust burbling as it comes out of the water.
Hello, If anyone has ever driven on the I-5 freeway South of San Onofre State Park and Beaches, you will know the effect the flat smooth road with wonderful ocean views all along the way to Downtown Oceanside to the South. The road is smooth as a freeway can be and the views are always so calming. Sometimes the traffic can be hectic, but the times we used it was the ending of a long day of San Diego surfing at various spots, Windansea, Scripps, Del Mar and Swami’s. It was a wonderful surf trip with my brother and friends. We had a nice lunch and on the way home, the Flathead motor in the 40 Ford Sedan Delivery was purring just fine. I was still excited that we had such a good time from the early wake up call, leaving Long Beach around 3:30 a.m. and arriving at Windansea just as the sun was coming up. We were the first ones out and caught some great rides and smooth waves. As the crowds came, we left to go search for other spots. Getting in some San Diego waves is always a challenge, since we were so far from home. So, by the last spot at Swami’s, we were satisfied that our surf trip was a full-on success and now, it was the long/longer road trip home. I was coming down from the excitement, but felt plenty of energy to drive home. Just past the Oceanside Harbor and Breakwater, the road becomes Camp Pendleton and the dry scrub areas all the way to San Onofre and Trestles up ahead 20 miles or so. Straight or relatively straight driving causes a droning effect of the wind, the motor and sleepy friends already head bobbing. Jnaki The Flathead motor was running fine, we had plenty of gas and oil so, we were just happy to be heading for home. The drone of the motor was a problem as it was putting me to sleep. Being tired from an early morning long drive South, great surf sessions at various places, then driving home tired and spent was not the best situation around. Several times, my brother would poke me in the shoulder as he saw me nodding. So, I pulled over and he took over until we got back to Dana Point and dinner at a great beach side hamburger stand. From the food, the short nap and familiarity of the coastal highway roads, we had a great time going through the beach towns in the OC all the way home to the Westside of Long Beach. A day well spent and was followed up with plenty more adventures in the Flathead, 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. But, watchout for the droning sound of a nice motor in all aspects of driving old cars to new cars... If a little toddler drifts off to sleep strapped into their custom car seats, then you know a life saver move and technique for a great nap for all. My wife and I discovered the droning effect on toddlers and more than once. If the situation applied, we pulled over in a beach parking lot for a toddler/new parent nap. As we went on our various So Cal road trips when our granddaughter was a toddler, anytime she drifted off to sleep, we pulled over in various parking spots. It was to take a well deserved grandparents' nap and family snooze... YRMV
GM Holden grey motor inline 6 (1948-1963), with the lump-stick given an extra 50 degrees of duration. 138 cubes of terror. Cheers, Harv
Harv, is this yours. If so can you give us a sound clip with a few revs. I would like to hear what this sounds like. Thanks Steve
