I just got a 17" Flex-a-lite fan blade and a Hayden severe duty fan clutch to use on my '56 Chevy. This car has a 383, Super T10, 4.11 posi, and a downflow radiator with shroud. I had originally intended to go with a standard duty fan clutch but after doing some reading decided that the severe duty fan clutch may serve me better. Upon receiving these parts, I see that the fan blade has a sticker which says to use only with a standard fan clutch. I believe this has to do with the pitch of the blades.

So now I'm wondering: Can I use these pieces together anyway or do I need a different fan blade?

  2. Is it a fan like this? If so you want have a problem but one of their thin blade fans I wouldn't try it.HRP

with the severe duty turning faster it might pull the blades into the radiator from flexing at the base or cause it to fail at the rivets from pull out because of the rotational speed ( Fords had a problem with this back in the seventies and it wasn't cool to drive hear a bang and see a blade sticking thru your hood besides destroying other stuff under it . ) ..

I always thought that a solid blade fan ,as Hrp shows is required for a clutch setup.

  6. Does your clutch have a 8 bolt attachment like the fan? HRP

Why would you be using a clutch with a flex fan?! The clutch is for a ridged fan blade. The flex fan is for use without a clutch, as the name implies, if flexes with fan speed.

  8. Every clutch fan I've had used had a solid-blade fan.

thats a high pitch fan , needs slower speeds the tips will pull into the radiator .

it cools better at idle speeds and doesn't overcool at high speed and the clutch will allow the fan to speed up and slow down with temp if it needs too and doesn't make the noise like a fixed fan does .

  11. The photo of the fan I posted is also a flex-a-lite fan but only in name,it is a steel bladed fan and incidentally I have this very fan on all 3 of my hot rods. HRP

I understand how a clutch fan works and I understand how a flex fan works, just no idea why you would want to couple the two.

Ok, my mistake, I thought we were talking "flex" fans, we are just talking a brand name. Yep, a clutch is a good idea with a solid style fan.

Flex-a-Lite is the manufacturer, my friend. It's a rigid fan.

Forgot to mention also that the radiator is in the 6cyl position.

Their sound reminds me of waitin for the school bus as a kid, they sound like a mid 70's gmc 366 log truck, sold all my old ones at a swap meet last year. Non thermal fan clutch's are ok in my book for heat probs n more air at low rpm's.
