This may be some of the best advice ever given out on the HAMB. Couldn't agree more.

It is the business aspect of running a small business that sinks most of them. Well, that and haivng a poor business idea.

If you have the startup $$$, go for it. I do know that when you own your own business, that's all you will do. As someone else mentioned, good luck finding employees willing to constantly put in a lot of 12+ hour days to finish a build like you see on TV.

If you want to give it a go, start working in a shop and learn all aspects of the business. Have a primary job and start your flipping business on the side, just in case it doesn't pan out at least you have a job to fall back on.

    Good luck!

ALWAYS have a second income (a legal one), to rely on WITH BENEFITS, and maybe, just maybe you will make it.........AND acquire a taste for peanut butter sandwiches because you won't be eatin' steak any time in the near future.

if people only bought what they needed then there would be no world wide source for vintage auto parts on the interweb. I sold vintage parts on ebay for 5 years, parted out 3 or 4 cars that were otherwise junk, but most of my sales were from swap meet purchases. it is a lot of work, I probably made 5 bucks an hour when it was all said and done, luckily I was going to the swap meet anyway.

for those who think this is somehow evil, get up at 5:00 or earlier for every swap meet within driving distance and get the cheap parts for yourself.

You can make a small fortune doing that. You have to start with big fortune and know when to stop.

  10. Been flipping cars since my first at 14, over 42 yrs and 350 cars later, (buying, selling, trading, building, hating) I've seen it all and that how you make it through years of failure, failure and tenacity. Easier to sell a $50,000 car than a $500.00 car. It's like ever other profession - steak and lobster one week, bread and water the next. And you really learn to hate people. Keep your day job.

    Listen to this man.

Take the knowledge you've acquired and go bust your hump in a real shop for a few years. That makes the other side of the equation, experience. Knowledge+Experience=a fighting chance. Good luck.

Lotsa good advice here. I agree on starting slow or part time.

Don't use those clowns on Fast-n-Loud as examples. That guy does not know how to buy & sell cars. He loses big time more often than he makes a real profit. I read somewhere he's (Rawlings) worth a couple million...family money/TV contract/etc. I'm sure this is the only way he can cover his losses.

Have you noticed how he's always running his hands through his greasy hair, and then always shaking hands with people? Gross!

You know I think they were in business and probably half ass profitable before a TV deal came into the picture. Certainly its scripted but in the end it is doable.

Remember the money isn't made on the sell it is on the buy.

That is of course if your not lying through your teeth about how great or rare optioned car is when you sell it. If a car is represented fairly and accurately it should sell for what its worth, no more no less.

I am always looking for good deals on cars, the problem is they are very hard to find.

A side job sure, but to actually make an honest living at it would be fairly difficult, but doable.
