What is the hamb cut off for year?

  2. i think the cut off is 65 or 66. either way the late model hemi is in. the late model 426 made its first public appearance at daytona in 1964. there were developed prototypes running in 63. leroy yarborough did run a blown hemi at talladega trying to go 200 mph on a closed course. he did not succeed due to tire failure. so i would say blown hemis are hamb friendly. history shows they were part of the scene back then. its obvious the 63 in the video is not a drag week type of car and sees very limited street use. it does fit the street outlaws interpretation of a street car. jim also owns his high school 67 coronet r/t convertible with a 4-speed. i have seen the car many times make a pass with the top down going in the low low tens on 7 inch tires. while not too smart or legal he has done it. the car looks like a big dollar correct restoration. whats not seen is the almost 600 ci hemi with a hidden 400 hp nitrous system. his 65 coronet is more of a drag week car with a pro charged hemi. a l-79 is a great street engine. i have a hopped up version in my 66 chevelle four speed 4:11. i have had it since high school.

What's fun is trying go to that fast with old stuff....1950s or 60s heads, old design pistons and rods, maybe a welded stroker or stock stroke, old driveline parts, etc. Most guys have more sense than to try.

  5. It keeps changing Jim. Once it was '64 and I think that '64 is still the cutoff at the HAMB Drags ( although I have run a '65 that could be a '64), I doubt that it would be considered the fastest car though it was only a 12 second truck ( high 12s last pas it ever made). But what the hell I had a lot of fun in it for 80,000 miles.[IMG]

There was a time when we were less tolerant and '64 was the cutoff later if it was something that the body didn't change drastically ( like my C-10) or say a '65 Lincoln?

I think we are at '66 now but there are some vehicles that are excluded like say a 64.5 Mustang?

LOL no problem getting everyone to agree, all that has to happen is to get everyone to agree with the beaner and I'll make up some rules (that I will quickly break because I am just not good at the rules). :D :D

@tricky steve you're not old, I built my first car in '68 and while I am getting a little long in the tooth I'm not anywhere near old yet. ;)

Shit fellas I am supposed to be out mowing and you guys got me started again. :D

  6. I dont think there is anything with doors going in the sixes thats really all that hamb friendly. I have raced jims car several times and won with the car in my avatar. It was a lot of fun. Fun and nostalgia come in alot of differant ways. I prefer the older ways of doing things with upgrades for safety and reliability.

For the most part, it's all about appearances.

  8. LOL well that leaves me out, I don't roll my cuffs and need a haircut bad. ;)

If you really wanted to be "HAMB Friendly" and do it the old way I have a genuine HAMB friendly olds motor I guess. Olds 394 '59 heads '60 block, I could drive it on the street if I carried fuel (a bunch of it) and a few of the fellas posting on this thread could drive it on the street as well but it won't have very good manners. I doubt that a millennial would consider it a street motor. It would on pump gas if there was an old Sunoco station around like there used to be. :D Now if I just had an old coupe and a trailer. Hmmmmnnnnnn Someone give me a '27 T coupe roller puleese Or a '64 Chevelle post car. :D

It seems to me that a hamb friendly race car should have a motor that was available in 1965. Modern add ons should be ok.

Hmmmmmm....I think I'd start with a Topolino, or just to be funky a Nash Metropolitan or Morris Minor. All 3 would be light, still period correct and could be configured to a reasonably functional street machine.

  13. At least jim didnt use a s-10 for his street car.

welllll...uhh.. I WAS all worried about being the fastest, now I'm happy just keeping the pistons in the cylinders where they belong ,and not shooting out the headers !!:eek: Or bending wrist pins...yuk..
I keep taking power out of it, trying to make it , just "live"
I have cold A/C and all my pistons are in there, going up and down, and not melting, that's a good day
    and it's a 1956 engine.. so, technically it's HAMB friendly.. ???

  15. Mine will be mostly vintage and probably not as quick as the previous builds. I love the ability to drive it daily on the street as well as a couple of passes down the strip as mentioned above... without the pistons swapping holes!

This one does not have Hamb friendly wheels but Harry did run at Mokan a few years back (at Ryan's option ;) ). I think that it's best e.t. is in the high nines--pretty swift for an in line six cylinder

The original post didn't specify venue or era.
I always say it is better to be a has been than a never was.
Here is a pic of my roadster that was the fastest street roadster in 1956 at Bonneville.
163.93. Ran 2 different engines. Flathead Ford did 158 and Olds did the 163.
Daily driven to work when it was not raining.
I still have the car but it has a 2 door body now.

Can't beleive that no one has mentioned Boyce Alquest he drove his 32 high boy roadster (Henry) through Los Angeles traffic to Northern Californias Fremont Dragstrip (400+ miles) pulled off the street tires put on track tires and ran a 9.40 at 140 plus after playing he put the street tires back on and drive home to LA. More than once he would drive from LA to Bend Oregon with 4 or 5 other So Cal Roadster owners for a rod run then on Sunday EARLY they would head out, balls out in one day because he had to open up his business on Monday.

What is the criteria for HAMB friendly? Holds the G/BFR record at Bonneville. 210.881mph. As well as the G/BGR record. IMG_1093.JPG IMG_1052.JPG Haas8_jpg.jpg

I agree, but I know what these guys mean. My Stude has been 205 at Wilmington, and goes to cruise nights, although it is hard to live with. Doing the dual purpose thing is never easy; if i could do it again, I'd have built 2 dedicated cars, and probably save some $$$$$$$$$. But it is pretty cool to show street folks your "racer".

Boyce let me sit in his roadster years ago in P-Town to check out that custom tilt column.
Cool car, a real hot rod.
    RIP Boyce
