The fastest I have ever gone is about 124 mph. I was only a passenger in my buddies Trans Am. It was a very memorable night. We got pulled over and my friend went to jail. Turns out his liceance had not been reinstated like he thought it had. The parents of my future ex-fiance were listening to there scanner and heard them run our names. When she got home and told them about the guy she had met they told her she could not date me. I wish she had listened to them.
135mph in a blown BBC powered Willys coupe at Palmdale. Not too exiting as the car went very straight and smooth. I've had wilder rides at lower speeds.
I've owned several Porsches and most will haul butt! Had a 1984 911 that I drove at 145 mph several times. Had a 928S4 (slightly tweaked) that I drove at 176.5 mph at the Portland (Oregon) GP track. Been over 125 mph on several motorcycles (165 on a Hayabusa)! It had more but I didn't! Speed is a real rush!
I used to have a Citroen CX Familiale in the 2.5 litre petrol turbo version. Very sleek and slippery; It could seat 8 people in comfort and still do 120mph+. I remember doing this once and was aware that everyone in the car had stopped talking. The speed had crept up to 120 mph without me noticing as it was so quite and undramatic. 120 is not really very fast - but with 8 people on board it is.....
maybe not the fastest, but the heavest.77 mph with a gross weight of 172.000lbs for a mile or so scary real scary, but fun.michigan's legal gross weight on 11 axles is 164,000. and the legal speed for trucks is a very slow 55mph.
borrowed my uncles 72 chevelle last week and did a burnout in front of the cop shop, the came back at over 130 for sure because thats' where the speedo stops. was a hell of a ride esp. when the street went down a hill and i caught air lol came home all shook up
North of Sioux Falls on I-29 in 1968, 160 in my Z-28. Timed the mile markers for fourteen miles to get the average.
my first top speed. i was about 14 when my dad came and picked me up from school one day and surprise he was driving a porsche he was fixing for a friend of his we hit about 125 going around a long sweeping right hand turn and i have never felt the same way about a car until i turned 16 and startng taking out my mom's 64 tbird there was nothing i could compare to the feeling when you stepped down on the pedal all four barrels opened up and poured fuel into her 390 then she'd downshift and roar off in an explosion of adrenaline i took it to about 120 and then she got a little light in the front end. later in life i bought a 2003 Honda CBR600RR and i know the speedos are set incorrectly at the factory but one day on a lonely stretch of highway in southeast kansas i hit 167 mph which with a 10% correction turned out to be about150mph once i hit that i didn't really feel the need for excessive speed so now im a rodder
Years (and I mean YEARS ago) I had a 66 Plymouth Satellite that I built a real stout 413 for. Ran mid to high 11's in street trim. One of my buddys dads own a bar in Lone Tree, Iowa. We left there after last call one night and headed to his house in Hills to drink more beer. By the time we left town I had the needle buried on my 120mph speedometer. At that point he PASSED me in his '69 Roadrunner 440, six pack, ram air. I put my foot all the way down and sat about four carlengths behind him all the way to his place, about 15 miles. I had the front end lowered on that Plymouth so it had about six inches of rake, at that speed the front end rose so much that the car was sitting level. I remember that I was just casually driving along, with my elbow on the armrest, steering with one hand (beer makes you brave, or stupid). There was one turn we had to slow down for and then we wound'em back up. He had a 160 mph police speedo in the Roadrunner, so when we got to his place I asked him how fast we where going and he said he was holding the needle on 150. God I loved that car.
140 on the bayway,71 mustang fastback,140 in an ex al.hiway patrol car,72 monterey 429 cj, calibrated speedo.but the fastest I've ever been was when I was running from mary rottencrotches old man!
Driving fast is never as scary as being along for the ride. At a party in @ 1971 I met a guy on a Norton Commando with full speed setup. Mistakenly I went for a ride on the back with group of Cafe Racer types who could not keep up with him. On I-84 in PA I couldn't see through my goggles and when I looked over his shoulder the Speedo was wavering around the pin. I later heard he was a photographer just back from 'Nam who took an m16 round when someone behind him got hit. He was evac'd out and the copter caught a rocket and everyone in it was lost except him. I guess the edge didn't scare him anymore. Powerband
In the late 80's I was still living in South Africa. Over there everyone drives fast. I drove a BMW M3 at about 260km/h = 161.5mph. Fucked up thing is I had two guys pass me..& I drove past a cop in a Porshe 944 turbo and he did nothing.
Well this probly don't count but.... I averaged 145 mph at Disney speedway,,, BE Petty. The best $400 I've ever spent!!!!!
130-135mph: Driving my 55 Olds to the local 1/8th mile track. Buddy was driving his Desoto fireflyte. Left him a cloud of smoke at the last stop light in town, heading to the track. Appearantly ol Tedro did like that. So im cruising with hte music blaring and all i hear and see 9at about hte same time) is tedro pulling next to me. Now, this is a two lane blacktop deal, with hills and no real shoulder. so, he passes me and I get a wild hair...floor it! Pass Tedro, or try. He sees me coming and guns it! Neck and neck at 125-130, in the wrong lane in stock suspension 55 with 350. Finally the track is coming up and quick...Tedro backs out, I ease over and pull into the right lane, nail the brakes and slide into the parking lot...infront of the Sheriffs standing there...cars ticking, has that "I just went way over the speed limit" smell. Tedro rolls in just after me. did I mention that Lucky was back there about 3minutes behind in his Impala/ He was not happy with us for leaving him sitting there at 60.
150 ish in my 68 camaro.... the speedo only reads to 120 but the needle was back down at the left turn signal. a while back i figured it all out with engine rpm trans ratio, rear end ratio and tire size, thats about what i got. 5500 rpm 700R4 trans 2.41 gears and 24" tires. sounds about right. now with 3.73's the best i can do is about 110.... bummer
hit 147 in my Dad's '67 427 'Vette, that's a scary ride with such an ancient suspension and ORIGINAL Firestone Wide O Ovals, not repros!!!!! Bike- 140 on my old Ducati 998, and I never care to do that again. Top speeds aren't for me, just too much to go wrong.
I asked my wife that on our second date. She looks at me and shook here head and says. " what a dork" . Back in 1990, Santa Barbara to Oxnard in about 15 minutes. 1990 300zx hit about 142ish.
I got a ticket in Madison WI doing 115 in a 30mph zone in a 66 Plymouth 2 door with a 426 motor ( in 1966). Got clocked by the Wi State patrol at 137 in a '69 Vette with 427 motor on HY 41, car had more, but the cop stopped the phun (in 1983). Did 181 on the back straightway at Daytona in a Petty car (in 2001). What a rush!!! Did 105 in my non-chopped '27 sedan, what a handful, thought I was a goner that night ( in 2005). Sold the damn thing b4 I died in it. Ain't had my 32 or my 46 out yet. The 46 goes out next month. Kermit
115 on a BMW K100RS on Pocono International raceway. 90 on the same bike on I think I-85 when the cop passed me, waved what looked like hello and then kept going. I was a motorcycle referee for a 12 day bicycle race. I was on my way home from Charlotte, NC with another moto ref. We had had cops with us escorting the race for the whole time. Our bikes were covered with race stickers. We figure the cop had been with the race. Saw us in the distance and sped up to bust us, saw the stickers and thought the heck with it. Waved and kept going! We were laughing so hard we had to stop.
I was lucky enough to get a shot at the "NASCAR EXPERIENCE" at California Motor Speedway, went 15 laps in a Grand National car ending with a top speed of 165 mph........I think the real race cars go fsater but for a lead-foot hot rodder guy they tme down their "school cars" a bit. I must have used a gallon of adrenaline on that trip and when I got out of the car when it was over I could barely walk!!
What a cool thread with great stories...Never saw this before but glad it was dug up. As for me in my chevy a balzing 65.
