thought i would start a build thread for my 13 year old son johnny blue . he turned 13 this week and i made a deal on a 29 model a truck for him . figure it will take about 3 years to finish since im in the middle of my roadster build. I am hoping this will help to get my last bit of time with him before he moves onto man hood . the truck has a ford 2.3 and auto trans mounted in it along with some other goodies , drop axle, 8inch rear end etc. it also came with a pile of new parts so he has plenty of work and parts to work with before he has to come up with more cash. He is pretty excited about it and it is hard to get him out of it every night before bed. here are some pics and i will try to update it weekly to track his progress.
Now this is a cool thread gotta subscribe to this one....... congrats dad on getting him going early!
cool truck, can't wait to watch the build...Have fun, I know I will always remember the days and nights in the garage with my dad!
Nice truck, has he had his buds over to check it out? Like to be a fly on the wall during that BS session.
here is a pic of him and his friends when we first brought it home Saturday. he was a little occupied with the girls when he first got it. my wife has had to chase them off since it arrived .
My dad brought home a '29 Model A for me when I was 13. In about 3 years it was a hot rod. That Model A was everything to me. Best of all, I built it with my dad. Enjoy the build with your son. I know he will remember the time you spend on his hot rod with him forever.
first night on it. he didn't have much time tonight after homework. we notched the sub-rails to fit the bed on straight. the truck had been a sedan at one time. the bed fits much better and looks better. this bed is rotten but i still had him take a wire wheel to it, to get familiar with the tools. he was a little intimidated with using the cut-off wheel on the sub-rails but picked up on the wire wheel. he has helped me in the past on my cars and bikes but i want him to do as much as possible on his.
Man that truck's a pile of junk...what kind of father buys garbage like that for a first vehicle anyway.....?.......... I'm glad to see y'all fooling with it this quick! I got a feeling I'm gonna have sellers remorse.......naah....Johnny's a good kid, and I think he'll do it up right.
Now we need to hear the son's view as this progresse's. Dad gets to teach him the difference between a mechanic and a gentleman as this goes on................
Very cool. My father isn't into cars either, I would have loved to do something like this with him when I was younger. Hopefully I'll get to with my children someday.
Very cool dad. I worked in the garage with my dad at that age.... now I'm 47 and still do when I can. I also like your boy's sweatshirt in that group pic.
i grew up working on cars with my dad or at least handing him beers late on school nights. thanks for all the comments and the reminder of how much it will mean to him. we went over a game plan tonight and " to do list" while him and is buddies sat in the truck . we are going to start with suspension then work our way to get it running before we start on the body. just about all of it is mounted but it wasn't done well( ****py welds and wrong set ups). motor and trans are mounted and turns over. i included a drawing he drew of the direction he would like to head. looks like he has the right idea. im not about the chop but if he wants to put the work in he can have it. also included a pic of both 29's in the garage, it something great to come home too.
Looks like he has a great vision for the project and it would be neat to be a fly on dads dash the first time you two head out on a run together, doesn't get any better than that!
Way to kool, my oldest son just turned 13 and has been around my hotrods his whole life, but has no intrest in them other than taking a ride now and then. my 10 yr old likes to help but dont think he will want his own car( I have hope) Eat it up while you can.
