I have a glass 32 highboy, Painted flat white. I want to recreate an old time steel car barn fresh or an old race car returned to the street. Does anyone remember an article in a magazine that detailed the process to do Faux Patina. I want this to be as realistic as I can. Please don't cuss me out. I want a steel car but couldn't afford the one's that I found. So help me make this glass car look like an old time body.I remember seeing an article but cannot find anything in my magazine collection. Don't tell my wife, I told her all these old magazines will come in handy. I have every issue of Hot Rod since 1962. Anyway, can anyone help me? Thanks Guys.

This is nuts. The gold chainers with there mega bucks paint jobs and now people who want to fake old paint. Prime it and be done with it.

I guess the next thing will be spray on rust and dirt or maybe some fake bug guts for the windshield

Street Rodder Dec 04 has a nice article.
It is quite easy, I just did my 32 Sedan Delivery, used John Deere Blitz Black for the base, flat grey, flat red oxide..... spray on the black, highlight with grey and red, use coarse steel wool, a chain, etc to make marks, dust some black, 000 steel wool to blend it in, use your hand with a rubber glove on it to make marks when the paint is wet. That is the "quick" course, it takes time and practice, you can't goof it up, just reblack and try again. I will try to post some photos tonight of some finished panels.

  7. You'll get flamed pretty good on this. IGNORE it! Half the ones that'll flame you have junk, and misery wants company. HMM, i wonder if "I'LL" get flamed for THIS? Make YOUR car what YOU want. I made the Vette in my avatar look like a 60's race car that was in "survivor" condition. The "Vette" guys hate it (fuck em), and everyone else loves it. More importantly "I" love it. You'll never appease everyone on an idea, so please yourself, and ignore the rest. If YOU'RE happy with it, what's the downside?

Hey 32 glass is acceptable in my book only cuz real 32 is just COSTLY!! But dnt waste your time with the Faux Patina crap...it's lame and that card has been overplayed!! Paint it a real nice color and paint a logo or numbers on the door as if some hot rodder from the 40s-50s just finished it and is gonna run it at a race!!

The best way to recreate this is to actually find one! I know it seems weird to actually use a barn car for this purpose, but trust me no one is going to fake it very well. You give me ten minutes alone with any car and I'll be able to tell you whether it is faked or not.

There is no point in it. I have stayed quiet it other threads about this but today I'm in a pissy mood so you will catch my words!

Faking patina, is gay. Its like having a scar and telling someone you got it in Vietnam, when it actuality you got it from your fifth cat.

Leave the barn look for the barn cars. And my hell you even admit to wanting this for a glass car.

  10. Just pin strip it and drive it. Hell just drive it period.

but basically if you must blow some primer on it, then repaint it then figure out where the paint is most likely to get thin ( look at real rotting paint jobs) and rub it thin in those places.

I don't doubt that you have already read the new hot rod because this is what happens when someone reads that crap but if you haven't get the new hot rod and look at the article about the plastic coupe with the highdollar paint job.

Actually the other coupe that looks like an old race car is more tastfully done.

  16. Well said...

This hobby revolves around doing your car YOUR WAY. If you want to create a barn-fresh look, do it. Whether your car was done by a high-end shop or in your garage, some a**hole will come along and tell you why it sucks.

Check out the current issue of Hot Rod Magazine (blue tempest and red nova on the cover). There's a "phantom" 3-window '37 that got the "faux patina" treatment, even has comments from the HAMB inserted in the article. I'm sure you'll see some ideas and leads.

BTW Groucho, it's nice to see someone create the survivor look with a car that actually could have been on the track. Just the other day I saw a picture of a 49ish Packard 4 door "gasser" that just made me laugh out loud.

    BIGREDTODD

  17. I agree on trying to make it look like some old race car. Not just look like another rusted pile. I do like the white primer thing. It's the ANTI black.

    Too late!!!:D

I saw spay on "rust" for sale in the spray pain aisle at a Wal-Mart last Summer!

No need for FAKE birdshit around here, though...plenty of the real stuff available in this tree-happy, backwards-ass city...just spray on your fake rust and park the car ANYWHERE for ten minutes and it'll have all the barn flavor you could possibly want!!

  19. Good point, I'm not a "Vette" guy, I always just thought that was a cool 'vette. Most people wll probably like it, even some guys on here. I have met a bunch of H.A.M.B. guys personally, and seldom heard them bash cars we look at in the "real" world. Probably 99% will like it and 98% will believe it's really "old".

Here's an idea-how about a top-notch paint job, then sell it for enough to buy a "Real" barn car?

Thats what we all need more bull shit and bird shit. LOL

  21. One more scenario if i might bore you guys-With the advent of the internet, and the growing popularity of our sport, these cars are getting eaten up quick. It just may be the "Patina'd" cars that keeps this "vibe" alive 50 years from now. Just food for thought. Do we want this "thing" we love to get forgotten once the supply's been depleted? I'll go with NO. My friend's got some semi-logical explanation for the real "big money" cars (Packards,Deusenburgs) not bringinging "big money" and Muscle Cars ARE. He believes the people passionate for the "Classics" are dying off, and the Muscle Car fans are either coming of age, or coming into money. When THEY die off the attention will shift again. Interesting theory at least. Think about it for a minute before responding.

I agree with doing your car the way you want. faking patina is probably the last thing I would do as well as buying a glass car but make it so that you are content once its done. It would not be the first car that stirred contreversy and I'm sure it would not be the last.

If the epopel that are passionate about the classics they WILL ALWAYS BE PASSIONATE about them. If they "die off" thats just fine by me then I can start to afford shit again.

If I had a barn fresh old paint that I adore on an old Ford.
And I needed to repair or replace a sheet metal panel,
You can bet your bottom dollar I would come up with a paint scheme to mimic that look.
I wonder how many here have used the worn leather look on there seat and upholstery???
    I did.
Plastic rods never ever interested me. Regardless of the color.
But I would never paint one to look like it was old.
We all think its cool as hell to take a car and make it look like it was actually built in any certain time period but we all get sick when we hear of actually painting one to look like it. We are getting as bad as the original stock loving boys.
    Interesting reply Groucho...

  26. Groucho,
You have made a good point in one sense but in another I personally would like to see the trend die.

Here's my thoights on it. I've always built the same style cars for myself maybe I'm in a rut. They were cool when i was impressionable the n for a long time they weren't cool. It never really mattered to me, popularity has never been a big deal to me. And there used to be an upside to our style of ride. they were cheap to build because they were not popular.

I look in the classifieds now and see trashed no cclass rutsted out projects going for 2 or 3k that when I signed on here 3 or 4 years ago would have gone for 3 or 4 hundred bucks.

Its all about supply and demand. Popularity makes the demand go up.

I hope I never see any of you fellas loose sight of our roots as rodders, but if the trend died it wouldn't bother me one bit.

what is that chopper builder guys name with the long hair...kinda muscular?

he has a car in either ck deluxe or old skool rodz...he faked the old look via paint.

meh...personally just go with a primer or other flat color and call it good.

I look at it this way....if a car comes out of some barn and is in great shape, it DESERVES nice paint.......if you can afford it. If not, that's OK, cause it's the real deal, not faked.....
If the cost were the same between FAUX patina and nice paint, why would ANYONE choose FAKE patina........
