I've known this for a long time. My dad and uncle belonged to a local Model A club. These were the cars of their youth in the mid-late '30s. They had reliability runs, swap meets and a lot of fun things. But as the members aged, the membership declined, the club went away and the value of a stock restored Model A dropped dramatically until the trad rod movement began. It'll eventually happen with muscle cars and possibly our cars if we don't keep teaching youngin' how it's supposed to be done.

Hey Ryan, please ban the word "patina." So we don't have to wade through this same lame *** conversation everyday.

Think I'm gonna go on eBay and sell REAL rust by the bagful. Here in Ohio we have plenty of it..:(

BTW, to the original poster, build what you want and screw us. Nobody's rod offends me.

Nothing wrong with nice, fresh, shiney paint. It really is "traditional"

I can't believe I am posting on this thread...

So, where is the line with fake?
Plastic body with patina patina, fake, sure.
Steel body with patina paint, probably fake.

Couldn't one say that a steel car with shiny paint, built to look period perfect or "traditional" is also fake?
A new period perfect car is still an interpretation of what the current builder thinks it right. No matter how well studied and executed, a new traditional car is still kind of a fake isn't it.

So, I guess unless you actually pull a car out of it's time capsule - it's fake.
    Or not.
    I really don't care.

  8. T dreamer I like the look of old paint, not real big on old rustholes but old paint has its own charm.

When I first joined the HAMB I had an old galaxie that had an equally old Earl Schieb job on it. it was my daily.

When we drug it home the paint looked pretty solid so before we did anything to it we got ahold of some good old past wax and hand waxed the **** out of it. it took me and the missus a week of evenings rubbing to bring it back to life ( would have been fasteer with a buffer). The paint was never show quality but it was solid and looked good on the old car.

Maybe give yours a good wax job and drive it while you're decideing just exactly what to do with it.

Now back to the topic who really cares if someone gives on a faux paint job or not. its their car and if they like it what the hell. Seems kinda silly to me but I'm not the one going through all the trouble. Maybe it doesn't fit the box we have built around out little piece of cyberspace but there must be a box out there somewhere for it to fit into.

I think you have hit the next new fad. 3M spray adhesive and toss a handfull of Ohio rust on it. Put me down for 2 bags!!

  10. I'm not defending either side BUT----Is it OK to take an old steel car and make it look new by painting it? But, it's NOT OK to take a new "gl*** car and make it look old? I just suggest take a fresh approach (if that's even possible) if you go that route. Why don't you base-coat it a nice color, and letter it like an older (but NICE) race car?

i dont understand this fake patina fad at all. people who care about their cars fix them to look nice. why would you want to make it look like a rusty barn car covered in **** and rust? a fibergl*** body gives you a clean canvas for a nice paint job. why **** around and try to make it look rusty?

    Look here: http://www.artsparx.com/store_antiquing.asp

Use the iron solulution first on any surface, then add instant rust.
Then, never post it on the HAMB that you did it. :D

    4 oz. bottle iron Item # 6691525 $7.65

    4 oz. instant rust $ 4.95
    8 oz. instant rust $ 8.96

I get people asking all the time "when are you going to paint your car?" Honestly the only reason I don't is because I think it's not worth it, and I'm working on the car that WILL have paint on it. I like driving an older crusty car as much as the next guy, and like both styles, but I would never, ever own a gl*** car let a lone "patina" one up to look like old steel! **** even a real steel car that was mae to "look" barn fresh is wrong in my book! Just more band wagon jumpers out there with no creativity, but lots of scotch brite and sandpaper

Ever seen a car where someone has replaced a section of fibergl*** with a panel from a steel car with bullet holes or rusted thru sections in it?

Once you get thru the origional shock of finding out it's a clever fake, then it's just a clever copy or replica.

A Brooksville body on Deuce Factory rails is also just a clever copy or replica. It may be steel, but it's no more an origional Ford than a gl*** car.

Neither is the real deal no matter what you do to it. Nothing wrong with that as long as you don't try to sell it as an origional.

Build what you want but always remember it is what it is, no more, no less.

Dang man, this is some pretty serious schitt fellas!

What about the guy who takes the time to let his car "patina" naturally.

That is not much different than full on fake patina, is it?! I mean, if a guy lets his paint get ****py for "the look" he isn't being honest with himself or, for that matter, the whole rodding community. As a matter of fact, I think he would be letting down the whole country, no, all of MANKIND! I think we should lay down some laws, or "guidelines" as it were, for those a**** us who would like the old time look of a barnfind car but without all the fuss of actually finding one, much less having to get all filthy trying to get said car out of it's co****. A certain amount of up keep on the new paint must be adhered to, washing, delicate waxing, etc. to truly have a REAL DEAL "patina" car. Of course, to arrive at your own barnfind style, patina'd car whilst keepin' it real will take up the better part of 10-30 years. Afterall, anything less than TOP SHELF quality paint and the proper maintenance of that paint is just "faking" it. I mean really, now.

    Huh?!

I have it on good authority that it is actually a faux pearlescent paint finish, not real pearl at all...

    Thank you!

Do a crazy 60's paintjob. Alot of those show rods were gl*** anyway. Your car would still be "traditional". Just a thought. :)

When I was first driving all my cars had patina,**** that was all I could afford then. I am not gonna fake it now! In 20 years (or less) we are gonna say"what were we thinking with the 20" rims and fake rust?" N.N.

Why would that make you laugh ?

Here is a picture from the 1963 Nationals of an F/Gas 4 door Packard.

G***ers were cl***ed on weight per cubic inch so there were plenty of heavy cars in the higher cl***ifications.

  29. Groucho nailed it with his comments. Almost all hot rods are cool, we just dont all have the same tastes, if we did life would be pretty boring! No matter what you build someone will still hate it and everyone else will love it. Thats reality. Just my two cents.

  30. I've ALWAYS thought that was a BAD*** car. I remember seeing it in Mags when i was a kid
