Favorite 2bbl carb and why...

    Been thinking about carbs lately and know I will be dropping the bomb some day for some carbs for the Hemi... In the mean time I would like to hear about your preferances and why. Strombergs, Rochester, Holleys, something else... what? Why do you like them and how are you using them? (drag, street, show & no go, etc.)

    I did a search first figuring that someone would have brought up a compare and contrast, but surprisingly didn't see anything. If it's been covered I didn't see it. Point me to it if so.

    Roch 2GCs are simple, reliable and (used to be) plentiful.

    Can't beat a Rochester for availability, price, and adaptability. That's changing as they are getting more popular. I remember when I used to be able to piick them up at swapmeets here for about $5 apiece.

    Did any one see those rochesters 2bbls in the summit catalog, I think they are set up for 550 cfm each. They have them in the circle track section. I wonder how close those are to the older ones.

    I can't make up my mind.:D All of them will work well for street applications and look right in their own era. My 97s run fine around town and on the highway. Can I get miniscule horse power and mileage increases with different carbs? maybe? so what?:D

    Stromberg... because they are cool and... uhhh, well.. just because :)

    On a practical angle, i've worked with Holley, Rochester, Stromberg and haven't had anything really bad to complain about any of the three...

    This is basically what I've heard thus far as well. I'm personally a Stromberg fan myself, but am definitely interested in other people's experiences.

    I personally like Holley 94's. Why? I am cheap, they are still the old 3 bolt flange, easy to work on, and they aren't Strombergs. Seems like everyone is on the Stromberg bandwagon. They are cool.....but I just like things to be a little different.

    Understand the feeling! I wish I knew more about them. Maybe I would consider them. How are they comparatively? What are the prices, for rebuild or rebuilt?

    They are very simple. Seems like you can find good rebuildable cores for $40 or so. Kits are still available at NAPA for around $20 (or cheaper if you know someone who works there :).....)

    Everywhere I look 97's are $100 for trashy carbs that might not even be rebuildable. That is why I got onto Holleys.

    I have to agree with Duckus. Holley 94s are still fairly plentiful and you can get them for a reasonable price. I've seen the ****piest looking Strommies at swap meets for major money.
    I run a pair of Ford 94s on my flattie and they cost $35 each for the cores and $35 each for the kits.

    I have to say that i'm on the rochester bandwagon. I'm running three 2gs and have had nothing but good luck with em. Somebody mentioned the ones from summit, and although they're expensive, they are made from the original castings so they're b***ically the same carb, except they're new. The only difference is they have been drilled for holley jets.

    Weber 32/36DVG. very tunable progressive 2 barrel, rated at 290CFM each. But go for $200 each.

    Weber 48IDA. Arguably the most tunable and versitile carb on the planet. Plus in pairs and quartetes, they look damn cool

    Hmmm.... you guys have me expanding on my options! Tell me more about Holley 94's! How are parts availability? When did they start making the 94's? Are there modern interchangable parts t at will work from other carbs (jets, etc.)? I ***ume no strange air filters required??

    More Holley questions.... what's the difference between the EBV, 8BA, 59 and 91-99 models? Are there any other models I should know about? Also, which Holley 94 model should I be looking at?

    I think at this point I should state my intentions... 4x2 or 6x2.

  20. Me personally? I like the carter BBD 2bbl's. still lots of 'em still out there,dirt cheap,and their basically the front half of an afb as far as inner works. they share the same flange pattern as the 2gc's too.

    I'm using a Holley 94 3x2 setup on my flathead, for no other reason than I already had the carbs, so why spend a bunch on Strombergs. I've found a lot of good info on the web, I can't attach because word docs are limited to 19.5Kb for Christ's sake. Is that because I'm an FNG, or does the size limit stay this low forever?

    I'm crazy enough to agree. I love the metering rods and they will take a lot of neglect (run dirty as sin) and get you home.

    I was trying to make a Carter BBD a secondary carb and run two in a 2x2 f***ion, but the carb adapters form Vintage Speed have only 5 3/4" between the centerlines on the 4bbl to 2x2 carb adapter. I will need about 7 1/2" between the centerlines or a new manifold for my 318 SB Mopar (if one exists)

    Rochesters cause I have enough to last me til the end. The last one I picked up was at a junkyard for $11.00.

    Which carb to use always depends on the application; that said if we are just talking hypothetically....

    Top group - (alphabetical order) Carter WCD and WGD, Rochester 2G, and Stromberg WW and WWC

    Second group - Autolite/Motorcraft 2100, Carter WD-0, Stromberg AA

    Third group - Stromberg EE (includes the 48 and 97)

    I know you asked why, but explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each is more typing than I wish to do. If you really want that answer, call.

    I am thinking of running one of these on my Poncho 350 as it has a 2bl on it now and I figure CFM's are CFM's. That is until I get all the bits and pieces to build a tripower setup that I have a manifold for. Project within a project.

    When using the Roch. 2G on a 3X2 is there there a cheaper way to convert the two end carbs,other than with the Sumitt kit?

    I really like the motorcraft 2bbls of the 60s and 70s. I'd like to someday make a custom induction setup using 4 of these carbs. They're so simple and plentiful.

    I see nobody mentioned holley 1904's, a mess of them would look neat. My favorite is the 4412 holley and most favorite of all favorites is the IH version of the 4412 with the idle screws in the throttle plate, on the back side, mechanical choke. Best carb ever made.
