I installed the new intake on the 361 today and got to work on reassembly. I found out my old throttle bracket is the wrong one for the manifold. The intake is an Edelbrock F380 3x2 piece. I'm thinking it's just an early FE vs. late FE thing, but I want to make sure before I buy parts. The two bolt holes on the manifold are about an inch apart, and nearly perpendicular to the firewall. My old one the bolts are farther apart, and in a plane nearly 45 degrees to the firewall.

So is that a later stock bracket being called for here? Anybody know if I need to change or modify the linkages to the trans and pedal?

I can take some pictures tomorrow if needed. Thanks!

What is this in? Automatic or manual trans?

Automatic transmission, 3spd Cruise-O-Matic. Car is a 1959 Edsel sedan. Like an idiot I left my camera at the shop, but I can get some pics tomorrow night.

  4. 1964 and older had the kickdown as part of the linkage on the intake, 1965 and newer it was on the carb. The 64 and older had a breather tube in the intake, the 65 and newer had a PCV valve and cap on the valve covers.

Anybody have a picture of the 65+ bracket? I'm trying to get my grape around how the kickdown would be hooked up.

I am assuming you have something like my Galaxie had. The bellcrank that works the kickdown as well as the throttle. I know this bolt pattern was used until the end of the FE(FT) in the truck line. [IMG]

Ok, now I get it. So that's what they mean by "Ford kickdown bracket." So I guess my choices are to weld a new mount on the original bellcrank bracket, or to figure out how to mount that kickdown hookup on a Rochester 2G. I wonder why Edelbrock cast this thing using that mount when it is less compatible with the carbs it uses

    Thanks for the pictures!

Glad I could help. Edelbrock might have offered a throttle bracket for the intake or it might use style the factory multi-carb setups used.

I think Royal Shifter has a 3x2 FE intake with carbs and parts for sale....I know you already have one but he might have pics. He is a good guy too and will probably take pics if you need....just a thought.

  11. Figure i'd chime in: attached are pictures of the 3 FE tri's i've got 2 are Ford's and the other is an Edelbrock F380 with the 4 bolt carb base setup (mine has 3 Stromberg WW's)

The 2 Ford manifolds have no provision for a Trans kickdown so out of luck there. The complete setup I have has the carbs progressive linkage on the passengers side and the footpedal rod on the drivers side probably running from a firewall mount. The bare manifold also has no provision for drivers side mounts.

The Edelbrock F380 does have2 mounting pads behind the back carb but the 3 positive carbs have no drivers side activation provision. Seems to me the 2 pads were for accelerator mounts and possibly an auto kickdown. Hope this explanation and Pic's help

I don't have any pics of what I done either... I don't know if it helps but I had a holly 750 dual feed from a 454 chevy and the 650 holley on my 460 had some superfine rust dust that plugged up the metering plate and it wouldn't take a rebuild and run better.

I used a small grinder and ground the mushroomed throttle shaft end smooth with the throttle arm and swapped the 650 ford throttle arm with the stock ford tranny kickdown hookup onto the 750 non ford holley. where holly had mushroomed the end of the shaft to rivet the arm to the shaft I just tacked it with the welder... enough to make it permanent, not too much that I could still get it back off if I needed.

My Edelbrock has the mounts for the factory linkage. I'm using it for a return spring location. I have no idea about the spacing. I'd try to use it so that the kick down part won't need to be modified. All you need to do is modify the carb to bellcrank.

Thanks again guys! I really feel dumb for not checking this before I mounted the manifold and installed the valvetrain, waterpump, etc. I guess that's how you learn.

I think that welding a new mount on the old bellcrank may be my best shot at making this work right. Mine is setup so that the rod motion from the trans and pedal are completely vertical where it attaches to the motor. Without a bellcrank of some type the motion is 90* out of plane from what the carb needs. Otherwise I'm going to need to track down and install a new kickdown rod and throttle cable.

So the consensus is that the 65+ bracket bolts on to the mani? I can't weld myself, so I may need to grab a 65+ part, measure and cut them, then take them to a shop to get welded up. I really need to learn how to do that myself...

If anybody has a spare 65+ bracket they can part with PM me and I'll send you a couple of bucks :)
