Put a new starter, old one was missing on my 59 Fairlane, 332 as far as I can tell, anyways got the engine running only the starter wouldn't disengage. Pulled it out and the solenoid was stuck in the engaged position. Connected a battery to the starter when it spun fast enough the solenoid unlocked and I was able to manually fully retract it. Do I have a bad starter solenoid, is it suppose to spring load to disengage or free float? Or maybe missing a shim? Anyways what's the secret?
You are referring to the starter drive, the solenoid is up on the inner fender or firewall. Go over the wiring at the solenoid first, make sure all of that is connected right.
My mistake what I would call the Bendix, the part that engages the flywheel, for some reason it won't retract once the engine starts.
