I have a '58 ford truck thats got a 272 y-block in it and i just got a '64 galaxie with a sweet running 390. I was thinking about throwing a 460 i have laying around in to the galaxie and putting the 390 in the truck because i've heard that it bolts up to the same motor mounts, my question is, does it have the same bellhousing bolt pattern and what will need to be swapped or bought; i.e. flywheel, clutch, etc.? The truck has a 4 speed granny box in it, not my first trans choice, but its in there now and will mork. The 390 in the galaxie has a C6 behind it. Any insight or previous experienced would be really helpful.
Why not swap the C-6 in too? Although if you really want the farmer 4, a '64 or so big block bell should work.
The C6 in the Galaxie won't bolt to a 460 so you might as well put in the truck. I'd put the 460 in the truck and don't fuck up the galaxie.
My brother has a 53 F-350 with a granny 4-speed we put a 390 in with no frame modifications, all bolt-in. The flathead in the 53 originally mounted on the center of the front of the engine & on the ears on the bellhousing. To put in the 390 we got a bellhousing, fylwheel & clutch from a 361 or 391 Ford truck engine. The flywheel has to be modified to be zero balanced for the 390, the 361 & 391 are externally balanced. We also got the front motor mount from the 361 which can be adapted to the 390 with a few spacers. This will give you a massive 13" truck clutch unless you adapt something smaller, we kept the 13" since we use the truck to pull a trailer. All Ford parts, makes it look like it was meant to be there.
The FE's fit into SEDANS real easy because both had side mounts and rear mounts off the trans. The Y block trucks have a front mount (attaches to front cover) and a rear mount off the bellhousing. Don't know how the FE's were mounted in a truck, but they may be the same as sedans (but then again I could be all wet). Check it out..
