Hey, been slowly putting together a front engine dragster project just for a little bit of fun, plan was for a belly ****on SBC but got to thinking today that maybe a Y block might be a bit more nostalgic, I got a rebuilder 272 sitting under the bench that we can hook up to a powerglide.......... what ya think ? Would dearly love a 394 olds or nailhead buick but they are pretty thin on the ground in this part of the world... can we make a Y block do the job ? Would like to maybe break into the 9's and I dont think thats too much to ask......
Personally, I would pick whatever fits the "theme" better. Y-block was probably a somewhat more common mill in the late 50s in feds so if you've got a short wheelbase deal with the TE style cage then go for it. multiple 2s, homebrew shorties, whitewall pie crusts . . .
I can't think of ever see a Y-block in a dragster. If you ever had a problem at the track. You'd never be able to borrow parts.
Thats exactly the deal im going for, ch***is is 149 inch wheelbase, has wire spoke front wheels, just waiting on a pair of Rocket halibrand "look alikes" and my blackwall piecrusts to arrive from the States. Frame currently has a 292 chevy 6cyl and powerglide sitting in it, that was another option......but finding it hard not to run a v8......
May not be popular but I'd do maybe a 400 Pontiac or 400 olds or 455 olds 500 caddy...mild build let the torque do the work...low rpm
Tim knows a thing or two about Y blocks here's his LSR Truck build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=573420,,, Tim Jones
