Fed up with winter...where to move?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by billj, Dec 20, 2008.

1. For me, it's got to be out west somewhere within a days drive of LA for all the fun hot rod stuff that happens in So Cal. I'm looking for someplace affordable (that's probably not in California!) with a warmer climate that's close to the ideal weather that California has. That means summer high temps below 90 and winter low temps above 30. Very little or no snow that lasts more than a day or two. Lot's of sunshine, like everyday or damn close too it. Low humidity, like below 40-50% unless it's raining. No bugs, or very few (this usually means living at an altitude of 4000-5000 feet unless you are on the Coast). Small to medium size towns or country living would be great.

Does a place like this exist? If so, let me know!

A friend just retired from the police dept. in SoCal and moved to St. George, Utah (actually Washington City, next door, in the south west corner of the state)....he loves it. I've not been there, but plan to visit. Check it out with a Google search...

7. The South, for the most part, is still a free country where people expect to work for a living and be left alone, especially outside the big cities. Makes a difference.

Low property taxes, very reasonable housing, few rules and regulations, cheap power and other than in a few bit cities, no traffic to speak of. Oh, and we can shoot first to protect our property or persons. Folks up to no good tend to pay attention to the "PROTECTED BY SMITH AND WESSON" signs after a few of their buddies had to make a stop at the emergency room on their way to jail.

Not too cold or too hot either. I was in Minot ND once and it was 101 degrees and 95% humidity. Down South it's shirtsleeve weather for 8 months, really hot for about 2 and cold for a couple. We get below zero once a year or so...for a few minutes. We spend less on power to heat and cool the house than most folks up North spend on gas for their snowblowers. About every 4 years we get enough snow to build a snowman but I've seen 2' a couple times...gone in a couple days. THE snowplow can't keep up so we just stay home. Every time the weather guessers predict a snow flake they close all the schools. But the schools aren't that good so it's no big loss. The government is making all the schools teach to the level of the slowest kid so it's pretty grim everywhere.

Yeah, we have tornadoes but they don't sneak up on you unless you're really stupid and not paying attention. Earthquakes now are a different thing, I'll take the tornadoes.

One thing to consider is to stay north of the GNAT line. Dang things will drive you batty. Worst three years of my life were in Mobile and Orlando. 100 miles or so inland and the gnats are not a problem.

Well, today is Wed, Jan 28th, and it was warm enough to take a roadster down to the bank to make a deposit. I can't imagine a better town for flying weather, hot rodding weather, picnic weather, boating weather, or just sitting out on the patio sipping your favorite beverage - we don't get mosquitos, and the breeze picks up often enough to keep the smog from getting too bad. Sure, it gets hotter'n blazes here in August...uh....um...er...well....but it's a DRY HEAT...yeah, that's what it is...a dry heat. Of course, if you like to fly (or drag race) the density altitude gets pretty bad around here - you start to wish for mile long runways - downhill. We do have a beautiful race track here - small oval, large oval, NASCAR and of course, "the STRIP". There's a few highways around here where you can 'test and tune', and sometimes you can get away with a banzai run to Pahrump - but, sometimes not.

I won't get into the other reasons for moving here - they're well-documented and have been for decades. Just do yourself a favor - stay out of the casinos as much as possible unless you're just there for dinner or the world-famous buffets.

I had look up Mohawk.............damn. I have a camp in Iron River and they get a lot of snow, but nothing campared to you guys on the Keewenaw. Why don't you post a picture of the snow "thermometer" they have up that way and show people what snow really looks like. That is if it's not buried!!

12. Yeah, I've seen them. Except all the clothes weighed them down so it's a compacted 4'10" version of this 5'10" in the pic.

Oh yeah, the body weight remained the same. Get the picture?:eek:.

AMEN to the gnat line. Upstate SC or Nc is a great place, above the line. Charlotte is 2 hrs. to the mountains, 3 1/2 hrs to the beach, we get a change of seasons, but rarely cold for long. Snows last 1-3 days maybe once a year. All the other Yankees are here, might as well join them. Plus, we have Auto Fair twice a year and Goodguys in October, NASCAR shops, and the speed channel is broadcast from here.

14. I am freezing my nuts off here in SW Suffolk county. Nice little snow storm yesterday, glad it didn't totally turn to ice after the nice rain that followed the snow.

I'm leaning towards NC or mid Florida on the east coast. I gotta have the beach, I can handle the heat if I have a pool. Being able to rod around the streets all year is a big attraction.

The Island here is great from April through October, January and February are brutal. My garage is not set up with heat right now, have no project going on either.

The economy is so-so, I should be pretty well set to ride it out unless my company changes hands AGAIN. I can take the buy-out at 55, but will have to do something else for a living. I am out of here regardless at 62.

Florida, Texas, Az are great places to live. I really dig the Pacific North West too. There's no way in hell I could deal with all the snow and cold winter climates you guys put up with in the Mid West. Makes my bones hurt just thinking about.

You could drive 8 hours south and still be in Michigan. There is a lot of great things about SW Michigan. I'll miss them when I get the hell out of here. What a winter this year.

Every single friend I can think of that left this area in the last 20 years has came back eventually. Except one, and he lives in Dallas. Must be something to that.

Don't let any talk of sandy beaches fool you my friend. Remember all the coastal areas are salt water. People who aren't spoiled by beautiful lake Michigan I guess don't know any better. Yea the great lakes shut down for 7 months a year, but they rock in the summer.

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]</o:smarttagtype> Well this has been an interesting thread. One thing I don’t see mentioned on here though is the other relative things that we are in a certain area for.
I have been very fortunate and thankful to have been in every state of this Great Country except <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>Alaska</st1></st1:state>.
Mostly have lived right here in <st1><st1:city w:st="on">Rochester</st1:city> <st1:state w:st="on">NY</st1:state></st1>. But lived for 2 years in <st1><st1:city w:st="on">Los Angeles</st1:city></st1> area and stayed on extended Trips for work at various areas of the Country.
With that said my Wife and I hope to move in the next few years.
There are nice things about living here. There is no traffic, cheap housing, great schools and medical facilities. There are also great outdoor activities like the 1000 Islands, <st1>Lake Ontario</st1><st1></st1>, <st1>Adirondacks</st1>, etc.. Also I obviously have long time friends here.
Which brings me to my point: We put up with the area because:

• There are Great Schools for the Kids.
• Longtime friends.
• Contacts- support. As in helping on each others Cars, etc..
• Knowing what we have.
• I have been for 25 years at my company.
• Beautiful Rec. areas.
• Excellent Drag Strip within 40 Minutes.
<o></o>Why we want to move:

• The Weather
• Taxes.
• The small town atmosphere is disappearing.
• People moving into area are very RUDE (our area has really grown).
• Salted Roads Kill your Car.
• Kids want to.
<o></o>We have family in various places Down South. But my hope is to move into an area:
<o></o>Where the Weather is better for more outdoor enjoyment.
• An area that does not Salt there Roads.
• Taxes more affordable.
• Friendlier People.
• Longer Drag Racing Season.
• More Sunshine.
<o></o>I think living in <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>Cal</st1></st1:state> is what did me in. Car stuff going on every friggin day, beautiful weather, tons to do, etc etc.. I LOVE it in <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>Cal</st1></st1:state>...
Hey North Easters, I put my Xmas lights up in Shorts with a Cold Drink…
But house prices in <st1><st1:state w:st="on">Cal</st1:state></st1> put living there out of reach.
We have been more actively hunting for a place to live these past few years but obviously again the other things aside from the weather will be the deciding factor.
<o></o>
But so far we have been narrowing it down to:

• <st1>Western North Carolina</st1>.
• <st1>Western Texas</st1>
• Certain areas of <st1:state w:st="on">New Mexico</st1:state>, <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>Tennessee</st1></st1:state>
<o></o>I see my fellow New Yorkers feel the same mostly. Its to bad as I think<st1> <st1:state w:st="on">New York</st1:state></st1>is a very misunderstood State by outsiders. We have met Great friendly people all over this land. We have also met unfriendly people all over this land. They do not have State preference. Also coming from <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>New York</st1></st1:state>, people automatically think you are from NYC, know someone that’s been murdered or find it hard to believe you are from NY because you have manners. I could go on but lets not.
<o></o>
Let me finish by making a proposition to my brother HAMB’rs………..
Lets all get together and Buy a Town.<o></o>

• So we can Help each other out
• Be on the Town Board so everyone can have a 7,000 sq ft. Garage in there Yard.
• Have a Drag Strip right Close that is Open Every Day.
• Have a Great Food place with lots of Neon.
• Have a Real Parts Store where the Counter help knows what you are talking about.
• Large purchases of Fuel and Oil so we can keep costs low.
• Neighbors that wont get mad about backing your Trailer in the Yard.
• Etc – Etc…….you fill in your ideas.
Wouldn’t that be Cool………..:D

Good idea about buying a town, I have often said to my friends, why do we not all move together, make it easier and more fun. I will try to post a pic of the Giant Snow Thermometer(Gauge). We have over 200 inches this winter now.

I know what the temp is today without even looking.:( But I am glad for you.
My son always said the weather forecast in LA is boring... its always the same.:):) So why have weatherman...
San Diego is the best. We always had a great time there. Point Loma is sweet..
I just shoveled 2 feet of snow and ice off my Wifes Bronco so she could go take care of her Mother...
By the way. The Bronco came from Rancho Cucamonga ...its white
And there was no glove to be found inside:rolleyes::rolleyes::):D
Sorry am tired and got smiley happy.

Oh and an addition to our Town is a Foundry to help support Billetproof.

22. I guess you must be in the upper, upper UP. The Keweenaw Peninsula. I had to go up to Houghton during the winters of the late 80's to test tires. We stayed in Houghton. Worked outa' an old mine site for a couple of years and then moved to the Test and Reseach Center. I think it was out past the airport.

We used what I think was called "The Old Stage Coach Trail" out past Calumet, Eagle River and almost to Copper Harbor. On the highway out there, I used to see the snow gage with the record snow fall years marked. That thing was TALL  .

Do you know a police officer with a last name of OLSON? I think he was outa' Eagle River. If you do, I'm SURE he'd remember me and our testing crew. I made a lasting impression on him he wouldn't forget. I had him so mixed up, he didn't know what to do with me :p .

All I can say is, if you live up there year round, you're tough. I moved south to get away from the cold and snow, then my job sent me back to it.

One of the best days of my life is when I took the plane outa' the Houghton-Hancock Airport in "March of '89 for the last time" . I get cold just thinking about it.

I just wanted to post a picture of our snow "thermometer". The top shows our record of 390 inches. That is the correct height at the top of the thermometer in snow that fell. How long you think before I will be getting the old shoebox out?
