Projects Fender interchange 35 Plymouth

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by daylatedollarshort, Sep 14, 2022.

  1. Sorry it is not a dodge- yet. Before I drive 4 hours, does anyone know if 1938/1939 rear fenders - guy thinks they are dodge- might fit on a 1935 Plymouth? They look alike in the pictures, but close is only good in horseshoes. Thanks in advance.

Absolutely not. Dodge, Plymouth, DeSoto and Chrysler rear fenders will interchange (but are not identical) in the same body style, but '35-'36 and '38-39 are completely different cars.
Edit: By "body style", I mean the same generation. '33-'34, '35-'36, etc. For an example, 40 years ago I built a '35 Plymouth coupe, that came with no front clip. In some horse trading for painting a neighbors Cutlass, I ended up with a '35 Dodge sedan for a parts car. The Dodge fenders had no bead at the wheel opening, the Plymouth ones, I only had the rears, did. The sedan parts car rears were totally wasted, the coupe's were perfect, so the car had Plymouth rear fenders and Dodge fronts. Also note that the Dodge had a slightly longer wheelbase, which didn't matter as I used a Corvair front suspension (remember when that was the hot set up?) and put it where I wanted it.

I obtained a hood for a '35 Dodge a few years ago. A buddy has a '35 Plymouth conv. under construction and they differ from each other in length, the Dodge has only one hood latch handle in the middle, the Plymouth has 2, one one each end. (If anyone needs it, pm me here.)

Iilustrious Sector's comment brings up another point since he's Canadian. The Canadian Dodges are different from their American counterparts. For the most part, they are slightly modified Plymouths.

Check wheelbases. Between 33-34 on Plymouths there are at least two wheelbases and that affects the hood, grill, fenders, running boards. if there are different wheelbases between 35-36 same issues will exist. Also what was said above the 35-36 Plymouth-Dorge might interchange. But you might have to use the whole front clip.

DeSoto, Dodge and (small series) Chryslers (generally) have the same wheelbase. Plymouth are shorter, it's all from firewall to radiator. The DeSoto/Chryslers used a physically longer engine. As pointed out above, and like I did, you can use the entire front clip, otherwise things won't work between marque.
