Has anyone ever built a fenderless '46 - '48 Ford or Merc and made it look right? It is possible to make the proportions look good without a MAJOR reworking? I'm buying one, complete with title, but missing a lot of parts. I thought about maybe running it without fenders, but suspect it will look pretty bad. Anyone got any photos or thoughts on this?

    No. Never.

  6. I had my 48 coupe mocked up with molded rear fenders and 37 buick side mount covers for front fenders, I thought it looked good, but I have no class!!:D;)

  7. Having trouble finding ANY pics of a fenderless "fat-fendered car"?...

    There's a reason:D

  8. I built a model of a 40 ford and couldn't make it look good without fenders.

Even the stock car racer '48's I've seen had fenders, just gouged out for odd wheel offsets.
Seriously, this is a BAD idea. It's OK to postpone fnders til the end of the build, since they can go on last, but do not push car out of gaarage til you have them!
It starts getting hard and tricky getting fenderless Fords to look right in '33-4; after that, possibilities go downhill fast.

Haha... I thought you were poking fun - from another thread...
But he IS from Florida! :D that cracks me up.

Guys on here have asked about running '35-'40, or so, fenderless.
It's very hard, if not impossible, to make those look good.

I can't imagine a '46-'48. If that's an option in your mind, don't buy the car.

Personally I say push the damn envelope and make it look right when you do it...but without major surgery I don't think it can be done....cuz if it was easy to make look right...everyone would be doing it!
Chop it heavy, slam it like a bonneville car and go for it. Probably have to narrow the ass end quite a bit (through the trunk area) to get it looking semi right. I have seen fenderless airflow sedans that looked good. This should be the next art challenge...make it a real challenge!!!

  19. Thanks for helping to keep Florida the laughing stock of the world. Where's Germ when we need him. God I miss him and the old HAMB.

Yeah...maybe you could make this look good if you had a "cheesegrader" and a tractor grill...

I had a long reply written out, but my connection went out and I lost it. Either way, I'm just asking questions. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. I just figured I'd ask. I thought it would look kinda strange, so I thought I'd ask the HAMB for ideas. I think this would be a good drawing / photoshop challenge for someone. Maybe we could get to the bottom of whether it will work or not. Slightly off topic, what's with the Florida haters?

  22. I have the rear fenders off of mine right now, while I put new taillights in, there is no way this car would look good without rear fenders. and the frame is pretty wide and the cowl too far forward.

Didn't Posies tried it with a Chevy, looks like something you could make from a French junkyard.

Most everytime there is a "ha ha, look at this P.O.S. on Ebay," post it's usually in FL

Picture; Sumo wrestler crossed with a Plymouth Prowler.

Section, narrow the rear till the trunk/1/4's is no wider than a Model A and fill the rear wheel wells so it's a flush 1/4 panel, then stretch the cowl so it can have a flat firewall, or at least a '33-'34 looking cowl look with full hood sides and move the front axle forward till the wheels are prominant to the radiator and headlights and you MIGHT pull it off.

    Easy way? NO.

    Oh, and J.B.

    Thanks for the edit,

Thanks. This is what I was looking for. Being a Florida native, I've seen all the weird stuff first hand. But, in my homestate's defense there's ugly POSes everywhere. I think I'll stick the '48 suspension under an "A." Anyone need '46 -'48 body parts? Yes, I have front fenders, the rears too as well as the hood, seat frames, etc. (basically the whole car) unless anyone wants to trade me straight out for a "T" or "A" project.
Thanks again for a useful answer and a visual to go with it.

Have somebod do some concept drawings of what it would look like. After a couple hundred wasted on that you will realize that you could have just spent the money on the fenders.

Looks like something that should have stayed in a french junkyard.
But in all honesty just sit and look at it and think how it would look. Do that long enough and you should realize the error of your ways.

It cured me of wanting to build my 46 truck w/o fenders.

I personally think everything after 1934 should have fenders on it...
