I have been tossing this around in my head for awhile. I am building a pretty traditional (with upgraded safety items) '29 AV8 Roadster. I can do fender or fenderless at this point in the build.
I'm heavily leaning to the highboy side but, ahhhh the buts......where I live we do not have very good roads........lots of stuff on them to fly around. I have been told by folks around here don't do it!

I'm not worried about the body as it is a 1978 paint job and has some nice patina and I'm only in the rain if I get caught in it.

I have never experienced driving open wheel cars.

When I had my old Sportster....I took the front fender off....that was a mistake....everthing went in my face! It went back on after one day.
I can put the fenders on if I don' like the experience of fenderless I guess.

My question for you fenderless guys:
What's the downside to open wheels? Do I get stuff in the face like the bike?
I would appreciate hearing of your experiences with open wheels.
    Thanks

If the car is the one in your Avitar, I'd leave the fenders on it. There is something very pleasing to the flow of 28-29 front fenders.

There are certain combinations of road conditions and speed that make your car a mess. At really low speeds, no problem. If you are jamming along, no problem. In the middle (in my car, about 10-30 mph) you throw a good bit of water, mud, salt, snow or whatever all over the place. Also, on a good rainy day, you get to throw up a substantial roostertail behind the car, especially at freeway speed. I think it is entertaining, but following drivers maybe not so much.

It can be an inconvenience, but I don't consider it a problem.

    Thanks.
I like them both ways but leaning to the high boy version more.

Turn your front wheels in water & you are wearing it. Some wind wings would minimize it but not stop it.
