I just read the wonderful thread about the beautiful '27 Frank Rose roadster.

It just struck me that there must be quiet a few States with a fender-rule or what you would call it.
And I find it a little sad, that so many that where shooting for a mid-late '50 look, and then chooses to build it with out fenders. Especialy roadster and coupés, there are som sedans with full stock fenders.
But to each Guy/Girl, his own, and everybody should Follow there own heart!

Can someone please tell me, which States and what timeframe were fenders and/or mandatory?

Maby even post some pictures of cars with fenders, I would prefere it to be new pictures of new builds with fenders, or old cars that proudly runs there old fenders and nerfbars.
If you have some old pictures of old cars that you Think is so awsome, beautiful or spot on, give it a go.

  2. I live in Seattle. It rains alot. We have a fair weather fenderless law. As long as its not raining. No fenders are fine.

Going back to the lake days, fenders would have been the first thing to come off before a run. So, I guess the bigger question would be, 'Is the car a hot rod, a street rod or a hot rod driven on the street? Hmmm........

Put 'em on for inspection and pop 'em off, when you get home.

It really comes down to what you are after. If you are 100% committed to a late-fifties, period-correct look, and you dont mind bucking the current neo-traditional trend, do it. But dont expect much love...

Would that be common practise? Would'nt that mean loss of point on licens and eventualy loss of licens/banned from driving?

So South Carolina is a fenders free State? Has it always been so?

New York, Rhode Island and California was a fender State? At least in the late fiftys?

  9. California fenders are required unless the car is under 1500 Lbs. Here is the way the law reads;
27600. No person shall operate any motor vehicle having
three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless
equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or
splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or
attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively
minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of
the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or
attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread.
This section does not apply to those vehicles exempt from
registration, trailers and semitrailers having an unladen
weight of under 1,500 pounds, or any vehicles manufactured
and first registered prior to January 1, 1971, having an
unladen weight of under 1,500 pounds.

  10. As for the "Look" - I like em! and they are much harder to build properly!

  11. I've been driving hot rods in Virginia for thirty years with no fenders.

It is kind of funny when driving in the rain. Someone will pull up close behind you and then back off pretty quickly due to the rooster tails being thrown up by the tires.

My goal is to have a period perfect Hot Rod, one I could have built in 1962 here in Connecticut. It will have bobbed 1930 Roadster rear fenders and cycle style in front. Bob

Heres a look that I've always really liked, bobbed body-mounted stockers on the back, with cycle fenders on the front

Yes and the "authorities" can be tough.Having said that I think the 60's style East Coast cars looked better with cycle type guards which is why I am happy with running them.

I want to find a front fender with that bottom swoop that will fit a 15-16 inch tire. Just to remind me I never should have sold my Lagonda project years ago. Bob [IMG]

  17. Pure PA barn find coupe, untouched since 1959. I believe fenders were mandatory in Pennsylvania at the time.

after dealing with alignment and proper fitment, I understand why people run fenderless.

Here is my 31 PU in finally fitment

New Hampshire is a "fenders required" state unless you have a street rod plate which exempts you. That plate came to pass in the last 20 years as I had a '32 phaeton highboy in the late 80s and had to have a set of bolt on cycle fenders to get the annual inspection. No one ever stopped my car the other 364 days, in fact I'd get thumbs up from cops.
Somebody mentioned the CA weight limit for fenders. Remember the picture of Kent Fuller holding up the front end of his Porsche powered tee bucket to show cop his car was light enough to run sans fenders.
Boones, the hard work of alignment is worth the look a full fendered Model A pickup!

Hotroddon, I like that that full fendered roadster with No windshield! That is so cool and smooth.

The cycle fenders is that a coast/style thing or a time style?

And the cycle fenders go well with small nerf bar.

The rule about the fenders are much like here, except for we put it like this; All cars needs a to cover all moving parts to protest others, and can for no reason be allowed to spray or splash on other cars, and thereby en-danger others safety. No specific rules regarting fenders, approns and muttflaps, as long the contains spray/splash and dosn't have any sharp edges.

But I preferes bobbed in the rear and cycles in front but thats just me. :)

Couple of possibles?? You would have to trim the valances back on pretty much all of these, trim and roll the leading edge, and weld the two piece ones together, but would get you close?

    This might work...

So it's like a gasser; If you do it like they did, you are wrong today. And if you did it like they do now, you would be banned back then!

    Clear as mutt!

So the Oregon car and the Larrson rod from sweden is east cost. So I'm a east coast guy.
