Just trying to make sure I have all my info right before I buy any frontend parts for my A sedan. Is there anyone who makes or sells 53-56 Hubs and backing plates. Reading on the Tech about fitting F100 brakes to early spindles and was just trying to piece together part numbers and prices to know what it'd cost but can't find any repro places that sell either. I wanted to find a price to maybe compare if I find something used. Next question.. I noticed that I beam axles come for different years 28-34(36), 37-41, & 42-48. I notice this affects the width is that all? I have 35 or 36 (can't remember) wishbones, will this affect my decision on which axle to get? I also noticed most spindles come 37-41 can they be used on all the axles aforementioned? What is everyone else running on Model As? Thanks
thanks for helping me make sense of some of this. I will have to measure my wishbones to be sure. Yes I will be running the spring on top. So with a model A axle the 37-41 spindles will fit?
A great magazine issue that helps with both questions is Rod and Custom #11 from around the late 70's. This was when R&C was on hiatus and they ran a quarterly or bi-monthly. This one has a Ford axle spotters guide article with dimensions on Ford axles from A thru '48. It also has an article about adapting F100 brakes to early spindles. Check through your magazine collections. If you can't find it let me know. I don't have a scanner but it's no problem to copy and mail either or both to anybody who needs them.
Here is a link to Deuce Roadsters Tech on this subject. I followed it and all fit well. If you use the later model self adjusters you will need to eliminate or modify the grease catcher http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5877
Thats the tech I mentioned earlier. This is the setup I'm hoping to use, what did it end up costing said and done?
the big expense will be the backing plates and hubs/drums. I bought an entire 56 f100 axle for 100 dollars, and kept the salvagable parts , in this case the backing plates and hubs the rest should cost around 150 total normal brake job stuff. I went for the self adjusters etc. I already had the spindles and king pins so I didnt figure those into the price. I used speedway steering arms, not too much more. Remember, on the self adjusters there is a left and right, so the manual adjustment slot on the backing plates on one side wont line up. Just another modification
