Anybody got any thermite? Caddy has been behaving nicely, tho I hadn't been driving it much during the day. As in, when the ambient temp is higher than 75 deg. I had re-located the coil off the intake and over to the fender, seemed to help tremendously. So, I'm out doing errands that don't involve speedbumps, steep driveways, or paralell parking. On the way home, it starts acting up again, BAD. Get home, (barely) grab the tools and the old stocker and swap it out fast while everything's hot. (stock coil was sitting in the sun, so it was rather warm too. Gee, it runs sweet now, all the sudden, whoda thunk? Went for a test drive, behaved flawlessly. I paid 15 bux for this kinda torture, and there was no pissed-off leather-clad chica anywhere in the equation??? I shoulda known what I was in for when I peeled the "Made in China" sticker off of it... (HalHal, yoo sturpit Almelican ****itarist dog, we get yoo *** now, modulfawkel!)only reason I bought it was cause PAW was out of the pertronix black coil... So now I have an ugly faded black POS looking thing in there, but at least it dissapates heat properly, unlike anything else chrome plated. So this must have been the Christine element, it caused the following: *unnecessary fabrication of teflon spacer *unnecessary purchase of aluminum spacer *unnecessary abscondment of edelbrock carb from the poor 18 second truck that REALLY needs it... *unnecessary near-maiming of ShortBus... *unnecessary wastage of several days out of my life *unnecessary replacement of intake manifold gaskets *unnecessary pissed-off rapid smoking of countless extra cigarettes *unnecessary impression to neighbors that my vocabulary consists soley of four four-letter words... ...and countless other things. At least I THINK its fixed... And yes, I AM lunning a barrast lesitol...
Ssshh! I mailed an old chrome coil to Tim...don't spoil the "surprise"! (Ha ha Ha...fear not, Tim...I used your coil last Summer as a stand-in for a faulty one...it works fine on everything but Cadillacs!) Hopefully a bum coil was your culprit all along, Burndupdude!
Hey Burnie,You say your problem is your coil`s overheating? Do you have a Ballast resistor? Have you checked your wirering? If you forget to turn your key off or the + terminal is hot all the time your coil will boil. Good Luck...JR..
[ QUOTE ] And yes, I AM lunning a barrast lesitol... [/ QUOTE ] ...its chinese, too. But its from Napa, so I trust it a bit more... hell, its just a resistor. The car originally never had one, nor resistance wire, as best I can tell, had 12v goin straight into it. I added it when I did the pertronix conversion. +12 volts from the old ignition feed wire, that goes from one side of the resistor and also to pertronix red wire. other side of the ballast res. goes to + terminal on coil. Black wire from pertronix to - side of coil. Wire from the points, obviously has been eliminated. Got that straight outta the pertronix instructions, also follows common sense. I trust the pertronix isntructions cause its written in English, NOT Engrish.
Jacobs makes a good quality 'chrome' coil. The chrome is more like a brushed nickel finish, but still looks pretty good. It's doing well too, specially when you consider it's hung off the front of the head. The blast of admittedly hot air from the fan probably helps, but the big trick - with this and any other coil - is that it's oil filled. Oil filled coils last a long time. Ten years ago they were about $25. Nowadays a little over $30. I believe. Here's a pic that'll give you an idea of how it looks.
Boo coo G.I.! You come Vietnam and eat banh chung with nuoc mam, yes? Drink many Bam Ba 33. Then you die smelling own farts.
Went thru the same thing at the beginning of summer with my chrome coil, Start up just after I replaced the fuel filter so I thought that was it (that it was getting clogged from the old gas tank), it would stop running and strand me on the side of the road, I would go get a new filter, and bam, start right up,,, did this 3 times over a week (stranded, new filter) so one the third time I bought two filters to have one in the car.. did not realize it was happening when the engine got hot until I was on the way home and it stranded me on the freeway and I pulled out the other filter and swapped it, No GO still.. so after sitting there and letting it cool a little it fired up and moved 500 ft before stopping again. (still on the freeway on a narrow bridge).. after beatingthe coil a few times it fired up and got me off the freeway.. Buddy had a old POS dirty stocker and brought it to me, fired right up and it is still on the car. I hate it as everything else is chrome and polished on the engine.. Thought about mounting the coil under the dash and running the wire thru the firewall as it will clean up the firewall and keep it cooler.. or maybe I will just go buy a nice black one and paint it or just leave it black and say F it and just drive
Nice setup C9... You gots a HIGH quality non-forrin coil, cost twice as much, doesn't have true heat-holding chrome, and has a nice billet aluminum heat sink! Man I wish we had a good vetna-meeze restaurant around here, I love that stuff. Oh, and Vietnamese girls, mmmMMM! Makes it easy to see why its a communist country, everyone wants to share the "wealth!"
As a card carrying member of the Cadillac Party I declare you Burndup, a true member of the Caddy faithful now. I am stoked that you got that baby running good, you have been re-educated by chairman Mao's henchmen and their evil chrome empire.....I just replaced the coil and plugs in my Hudson which would not start for a month, new coil and viola she fired right up!
[ QUOTE ] Ain't nobody said that an education was cheap! [/ QUOTE ] Car parts are like women. If it looks good, your going to have trouble with it.
Ratboy, I think I have picked up your manual EVERY day that I have worked on the thing... Almost gotten ready to mail it back to you several times when I thought I was done with it... I'll just hang onto it until either the car is sold, or fully restored, or whenever you need it back! Thanks man, I really appreciate it, its saved my *** a bajillion times already. [ QUOTE ] Ain't nobody said that an education was cheap! You are one smart mofo now.... [/ QUOTE ] Hah! On top of what I already paid for college... I'm a freakin walking automotive einstein by now, brutha! This caddy is my 20th car in my 29 short years... and not the first one that has decided to torment me... Now to make that truck faster so Ricky stops being like a little *********** on my *** about it...
Awright, heres a teaser, but only to show the evil "Red Star Long March" ignition coil of communist misery, and its former location. No more pix until its "Done."
The folks at Pertronix tell you not to use a ballast with their Ignitor or Ignitor II. At least that is what they told ME.
Holy **** Dude! That looks Killer! I think I may be the only one that truly understands how far you have come!!! M-
By mistake I left the ignition on without the engine running for about a half hour on my 57 Buick. There was no ignition light on the dash to remind me. The coil overheated and cracked, losing some oil. It ran but broke down after, just about limped home, and it was only a mile or two. Mart.
Thanks, I've been hanging around Skratch's place too much, the fascination with gold engine paint is infectous. At least mines on a real Cadillac!
burndup, i had a very similiar experience with one of them there "Commie Coils"....except my 55 buick ****in broke down on the INCLINE of the San Mateo Bridge (high incline, sun in face, almost rear ended by a big rig hauling Jap cars). The ****in red star coil failed. Just ****in failed. No worky worky. I had to be pushed off the bridge to a 76 station then walked two miles to Car Quest auto parts and bought a USA made coil for $40 bucks. the car fired right up and has been running great since. With the Commie Coil, the car was stumbling and missing out, and just ran like **** after about 4 months of light use. Little ****ers. Anyway, I feel your pain brother....haha John
From '61 to '65, Ford used to paint the block on V8s black and the aircleaner and valve covers gold. In '66 they went to corporate blue...
