Oh man 38s are just the coolest thing. I should know, I have the most discerning taste when it comes to cars................
Well, I got on too so I biased. Great find and good luck with it.

Shoot Rusty. That thing is so friggin' sweet! You have to save all that writing. I would imagine that the primer painted over it would come off with some slow attention and a scotchbrite like you said. Too cool! Congrats! Thanks for sharing such a cool story!

I can see the difference a little elbow grease did on the passenger door from where it was at his place, to your driveway.

I was sitting here thinking why anyone would primer over that writing, but then thought that to the man you bought it from, it was better looking as his nice show car, as he pictured in his auction. I'm sure he probably didn't like it having all the next owner's info painted all over his car and had plans of getting rid of that ASAP when he got the car back.

Rubbing compound or a clay bar may also do a double duty job of getting the top coat of primer off while slightly polishing the paint that is left on the car. I know you'll do a great job. I've just been thinking how cool that would be to discover something like that. It's almost like uncovering a hidden treasure or restoring an antique painting. You've already got what other people are trying to fake on their old cars. Too cool...

  10. Screw taking her for a ride, flip the old owner the keys (tell him not to pile it) and let him take her out for a burger or to a drive in. How often does a 70 year old get lucky in a car he owner 40 years ago.

man what a thrill! This hot rod was around in my hot rod hay days. Dick Dieken was the go to guy about speed in Grand Island. He worked at the pontiac garage b-4 openeing his own speed shop. He and his brothet Fuzz Dieken were really knowledgeable and were the tech/Inspection experts at the Grand Island drag strip. I remember when Wally and the safari visted the strip. As the coupe was passed to Dave Herman, Jim Ross, it was always racing locally and was a super runnin coupe. Our car club the C-Dans all raced our cars and we all wore rat fink style hats, made by taking felt dress hats , soaking them w/water and streching them over posts untill high and pointy. A thrill to see a vintage find linked to my past! Thanx for sharing. Good Luck w/project.

Man this is awesome information. He never really mentioned his shop being a speed shop but I believe it. The more i talk to him the more i learn. I wam sure i will be picking your brain on this car. Is there any way that Dave herman, Jim Ross, or Don Keller are still around? Thanks, THanks, THanks just makes the find that more exciting

Dang, sololobo, stuff like that makes Rusty's new car that much cooler!

Now we just need to find some photos from it's heyday... preferably with the front suspension unloaded and some smokin' hides out back!

  24. If it was fiberglass and the old paint and rust were fake, I'd be worth $60-$70 grand!

I was so excited about this I called Jim Ross in Grand Island, Ne. today and filled him in. He is not a computer savy dude so was going to get assistance in seeing the posts etc. His phone is 308-382-5477, thats his car sales business. He is really a nice guy and I'm sure he would enjoy talking with you. My mother worked at Herman plumbing as a bookeeper but I don't know if Dave is around G.I. anymore, but i'm sure Jim would know, he told me that he bought the car at Graff Pontiac when Dave Herman traded it in on a 62 Ford ragtop. Keller his associate in the car was a salesman at the dealership and called Jim suggesting they team up on it. I called another old bud in G.I. Ron Cecil Reames and he told me he had a pic of him standing by the coupe after Dieken had just painted it. He even thought he might have a pic of it at the G.I. drag strip. I will do my best to secure ant thing available on the coupe. My bud Ron Reams has a shop in the building National Auto Parts which is advertised on the coupe door. Itwas our local speed shop in G.I. And the place where I bought my first 57 chevy BelAir 2-dr. My dad had bought a small garage in a lil town 12 miles N. W. of G.I. which was a Ford dealership in the 30s & 40s. WE auctioned off a access of old parts and I bought a farm truck load of mufflers and tailpipes which with a few bucks bought the 57 chevy which had an underhood fire. Ron & I went to a autobody trade school together and we repaired the 57 there. Sorry to rant on but it really is a treat to stir up these super great memories. I'll stay on this and forward anything else I can. Best Regards-Sololobo

You should try and get the 9 inch Bronco rear end if you can ...

58 inches Wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange and has the old Ford pattern ( 5 on 5.5 :) ) ... plus a lot of them are POSI and have 3.50, 3.70 and 4.11 rear gears

    Cool find BTW ...

  29. hey rusty just an fyi my brother made two seats in the back of his 35 5 window coupe for his two kids. he is my height which is about the same as yours and all he has to do is slide the seat up a little. they are two buckets that the upholstery guy made out of foam and wood. looks awsome and his daughters car seat fits also. she is four and his son is six. so when your son is old enough to turn around in the car seat it would work ok. what he did was reccess the seats flush to the back glass which slightly went into the trunk an adult our size would get a cramp in the neck but the kids fit. then to accent it he mad a it look like a corvette seats does out of a 58 vette with a console for cup holders for the kids. that is a sweet ride can't wait to see it on the road.
