I recently scored a 1963 "Deckel" milling machine for FREE !! However it was sitting outside for three years after being replaced with CNC equipment, Therefore I have many hours of "sweat equity'" in it to get it operational again. But WOW, What a nice compact and sturdy milling machine-It weighs in at 3000 lbs. !! The table swivels all kind of different directions and it also has a horizontal spindle that will slide in and out. Best of all it will hold 1/16 thru 1 inch shank end mills !! Now I need to get back on the 32 pickup project.......
I've never seen one with a table like that. Seems like you could even more awesome stuff with that setup.
Wish I could get suff like that for free! Looks like a good little machine. What's that green thing behind it?
Free?! Damn You and Your luck! Sold a few of those and similar while working in metal processing industry, great and very popular machines back here in Croatia...
Ya can't beat german engineering. What the hell, nobody gives away something like that! You're very lucky, enjoy.
The green box behind it houses the Start relay, Transformer, Master disconnect switch, etc. All deckels come with this box. The on/off ****ons that are on the mill connect to it and also this is where your 3phase power is connected to. The mill was also green from the factory but I have not had time to paint the box yet. Here is a pic of the lathe, also a rusty freebie when I got it, but now works fine....
You got your lathe for free too!!! Where in the world do you find these sorts of deals? The only thing I can ever get for free are steel s****s and I've got to beg for 'em. You're one lucky SOB!
Fortunately, it was covered with a half A## tarp. Most of the rust was from condensation. It came off pretty easily. However some water got inside of it and it has some bearing noise that I will have to address. I just have to figure out how to get inside the Main casting to get to the Many shafts with gears and bearings.....The Germans are great engineers but some of their stuff is not easy to work on...I guess this thing was made to last forever if the water had not got inside it, Oh well the price WAS RIGHT !!
HotRod Joe, I work as a toolmaker at a major air tool manufacturer for the past 25 years. You would not believe the manual equipment they have thrown out to replace with new NC stuff. it usually sits outside for a year or two till they get tired of looking at it then it is sent to the shredder. At the time I got these The plant manager we had then just said "I want all this stuff gone by Monday, I dont care how ! " The Plant manager we have now would will not let anyone have any surplus stuff,it goes in the trash unless a another plant in our division needs it.. BIG companys WASTE tons of money....
HotRod Joe, I have worked for a major air tool manufacturer for 25 years. You would not believe the amount of manual machines they have thrown out to replace with NC stuff. The surplus machine usually sit out back for a couple of years till they get tired of looking at them. When i got these two items Our previous plant manager said " I want all this stuff gone by Monday, I dont care how ! " We now have a new Manager that puts all surplus stuff in a staging area inside- If no other plants in our division want anything it GOES IN THE TRASH !! He will not let anyone have or buy it. We will probably get a new manager soon.. Maybe he will be a "GEARHEAD" !!
If the bearing noises are on drivetrain parts, maybe they don't matter. If you can lube them it will be annoying, but it won;t affect the accuracy and they will probably last like that forever. 3000 lbs! Holy cow! You mean that thing weighs more than a Bridgeport? I thought Bridgeports were only around 1700 lbs.
We had an updated cnc model like that in our shop.It was pretty usefull as you could run it both vertical and horizontal.Getting parts and service was a major problem even though it seldom broke down. The gear train on these units are pretty complex.Burl.
Boy I think all of us could use stuff like that. Great score. Man instead of throwing stuff away they should put it on Craigslist and give the money to some charity.
Yeah, it looks like you can get that pesky horizontal table out of the way if you need to and clamp to the vertical table. I'd like to see something set up like that. Thanks, Kurt
I've used one of those before. There is an attachment that after rotating the head 90 degrees gets bolted on and you can spline axels. Great score!
Yea, you could bolt some BIG stuff to that vertical table if you had something really tall or something. And it look like the horizontal table pivots??? That could be very useful too! I work with CNC's everyday but I just LOVE the way they thought up ways to machine stuff back in the day of manual equipment. Quite amazing really.
Hey Bomb, i'm only 2 hours away, gonna have to come down and use that thing...wish ya could get one more... Mott
The really cool thing is ... A-Bomb is a tool and die maker ... so he can really make beautiful stuff with it
