Seriously thinking about keeping the flattie and the 3-pedals. I want to follow a 50s theme for the body mods. Not sure about cutting the top yet.
Completely agree, it's night and day. Plus a properly working R-10 OD trans will reduce your cruising RPM way more than any T-5. The column shift is hard to swap from due to solenoid placement, but IMO worth keeping on the fun factor alone. The Mercs had pretty problematic shifter tubes inside the column, as opposed to the Ford's external, but out of the three I believe 50/51 had tougher tubes than the smaller 49s tube. Still and all I wouldnt go bangin' the gears! Ha, I laughed out loud reading this. Although the outcome IMO was well worth the wait, I have to respect your patience!
Thanks, already scored on an OEM set of fender skirts. The man in the Brown Truck should be delivering them next week. They are shipping from Ohio.
I couldn't agree more with keeping it original. There are some kool kustoms out there, but that Merc looks to nice to chop or change and nothing sounds like a V8 flathead. Had the same problem with mine, thought about chopping it but just couldn't do it. I'm running the original flattie with 3 sp/od, 75 mph @ 2200 rpm and never gets tired. My only suggestion is gut the wiring and convert to 12 volt with a good fuse box. Drive the wheels off of it...welcome to the club.
HotRodTim delivered the Merc about 10:30pm last night. Rolled her off the trailer, fired up the flattie, drove her on the lift, shut her down, and locked up the garage. Anxious to get back today to really look her over. Can't cut the top on this one, just original enough to work the rust issues, rewire, convert to 12 volt, rework the exhaust to exit out the rear bumper, and think seriously about my flattie plan. Can't beat the sound of that flathead! Would love an Ardun in that engine compartment, but not sure my pockets are that deep.
Just got back from the shop. Put the Merc on the lift to check her from top to bottom. Not bad. Needs inner/outer rockers and some driver side floor work. One small patch needed under the left side of the rear seat. Someone worked her over before because I did not even find a penny, or anything interesting under the rear seat! I am sure once the work starts other unknowns will surface.
Keep the flattie & dress it up. Had a 51 Merc with a nail-head in it out of a 56 Roadmaster. Was a quick car Butch
Good score, welcome to the club! Just in case you need a reminder, here's a sticker I have on my tool box...
Sweet ... I would be the last person to give you advise on what to do with it. I have always been a fan of standard height Mercs though. All I can say is Drive it like a rented Hyundai !!!
I don't exactly recall from who but I know it was a guy here on the HAMB. You could post a picture of the sticker and see who might know.
Just got back from the shop. Had the Merc one week and already tearing it apart. More rust than anticipated so, I am in for a full frame-off rebuild. Already got some sheet metal on order. I think the rebuild deserves it own thread. The interior is already out and both rear quarter panels are off the car.
Looks like a good Merc! Glad to see you joined the Merc Club also. I'll make sure I add you to the list.
Alot has happened to this Merc since I posted last. Had a false start with a HAMBer that was supposed to repair the rust. Took my money and left the rust after sitting in his shop for approximately 1 year. So, desperation breeds inspiration. Did the work myself. Inner/outer rockers, fixed the bottoms of both "A" and "B" pillars, installed front and rear floors, and the trunk. Did some major rear inner rear quarter panel repairs. Lots of work and learned alot. Now this Merc is ready for the body to come off that rusty chassis. Will media blast and paint the bottom of the body and install on my spare Merc chassis that is already blasted and painted.
Here are some pix of the spare chassis that I will now use on the Green 50 Merc. It is now media blasted, primed, and painted. The spare chassis was in much nicer condition than the original chassis, which was heavily rusted and pitted.
I can't wait to see this one.... You seem to get that "look" down, judging from the merc for sale. Subscribed!
