My wife has been wanting a 54 Chevy for quite a while now and we finally found her one today! She wants it as low as we can get it so the plans are calling for a Fatman superlow crossmember and a Gambino notch and 4 link. She also wants it to have some more go power, so now I'm looking for a good donor car to give up it's engine and trans for the cause. I've also gotta have a rearend. I've read tri-fives, novas and camaros will work. Any other suggestions as far as good donor vehicles for an axle?
Ive got pictures in my profile of my 53 with a 4x4 S 10 in the back end..it also has 3.5" perch blocks. and im pushing at least 325 to 350 H.P. to it it has seemed to handle that just fine.
Use a No Limit front end of you want it to scrape the earth. I've got an 80' Camaro 10-bolt in our '53 and it fits great.
If you're going with a 4-link it doesn't really matter what it comes from as long as the width is right - G-body Monte Carlo and the like would work just as well, 58-64 Chevy, and others. The Tri-5, Camaro, Nova, and S10 4x4 rearends are all ones that are just about a bolt-in to the stock suspension with only a minor mod to the spring perches. If you need coil pockets for bags or different springs, one of the others might be a better choice.
Will the No Limit frontend get me lower than the Fatman superlow crossmember? She wants it laid out when it's at rest. Is the four link the best way to get it low out back or are there other options that work better?
you're on the right track with your donor car ideas. check out www.50chevy.com for some good info and pics. that's a nice looking car, yer old lady has good taste.
I have a 10 bolt from a '79 Camaro in my '53 wagon. It's not from the same car, but it also has a small block and th350 tranny. With this setup, I was even able to use the driveline from the Camaro without modification. Maybe it's worth looking into an old Camaro.
I just got my fatman ultra low and gambino tail dragger kit in the mail the other day from Gambino Kustoms for my 53 chevy... I would suggest calling Alex... he will get you setup with what your looking for with no b.s. The kit looks great and every part is excellent quality. I just finished sand blasting my frame, and im getting ready to put the MII on tonight. im running a '57 chevy rear... Found it on craigslist cheap and it was already rebuilt... - Jon
