Great to see your daughter involved. (have previously) written about my failure to do so ). These are the memories you will cherish, savor them, teach and be patient. Maybe in your advanced years they'll find time to go with you to a car show on father's day as my daughter did this year and my son to Bonneville with me!

  4. Just reading this for the first time and pulling the engine with a rope a mile down the road is just funny as all get out. Around here it would have fallen into pot holes to never be seen again.

Butch, the engine's at least had the heads off at some point. It has later-model heads on it. What are the casting numbers?

The heads that were on it have a casting number of #3988338X (the 8's 9's & 6's are really hard to tell apart because the castings are horrible)

But I also have a set of Power Packs with a casting number of #3795896

My plan was to have the power packs machined for 184's, new guides, 3 angle valve job, screw in studs, all new parts, and hardened seats. $600 in labor. I will NOT be using modern heads because these heads I have had since I was 16.

Dropped the old girl off at the machine shop to have it cleaned and nothing machined or installed.

I'm gonna bring it home and smooth off the casting marks.....then have it re-cleaned and machined.

I smoothed a small spot on the side and it really motivated me to do this. Should be fun.

Haaahaaa! I just showed a co worker this guys pic of his engine sitting in the middle of the street, cracked me up. Then the hippo comment...man that was a great thread....wonder what ever happend...

As far as this thread, awesome story. I have been thinking about finding an old 283 to build up for my truck or next project. I just think saying you have a 283 in it is much cooler than a 350, even if it is a little step backwards in the power dept. My little one is only 5 months old but I plan on doing everything I can to get her involved with the hobby...

Lookin good man! The inside of that engine doesnt look half bad for sitting so long. I like the gigantic gloves your boy is wearing. This is a project your kids will remember for a very long time.

Thanks guys. It's been a lot of fun.

Thinking of painting it similar to a Chevy orange but punched up a little with some metallic. Not sure.

I'm thinking solid lifters, dual quads, power packs with 184's, very mild cam and figure out a car it will go in.

Not an option to slip it into your dad's old '46 truck?

    Hi Butch

Boy does your story bring back memories for me as I had a 57' Bel Air with the ' 270 ' motor in 59-60 doing a little street racing

Hanging out at Bob's Big Boy in Van Nuys the ' 270 ' engine was the hot to go thing to have in your tri 5 chevy

Now days Mellings and other people make a copy of the Duntov cam the 097, and did they ever sound great with some ticky - ticky in the valve train and some glass packs you knew the car was a Factory hot rod

With todays sticky tires you might think about some better rods & bolts as they were pretty spindly, if you are going to gas it up at all there will be more load on the bottom end as back in my day we just had narrow hard tires that just smoked very easy

Would hate to see you break you new toy because of a weak rod, might want to clean up the sides of the rods too and a bead blast to keep any cracks from starting

    Have fun. G Don

Thanks for posting your 283 story. Brings back lots of fond memory for me also. I had a hopped up 270 H.P. in my first 55 in the late 60s. You never get over the music those motor make. It's like your first, favorite 8-track tape you never forget it.
I guess that's why I have a fresh 327 domed pistons, solid lifter motor sitting in my 55. Just waiting for it first test drive. Ron

I have a 283 that a buddy gave me about 10 years ago. He got it with a car he bought but had no need for it. I oiled it and sealed it in a plastic bag. A month ago I open it up to look at it just for fun. It was apparently given a "quickie" hone and ring job at some point--no real care--crud caused a rod bearing to score- a big oil pump put on to save the day and then they gave up. It cleaned up at +.030, crank only need polish, and it is being prepped to go into a 51 pick-up. Yep---giving away some cubic inches--but I can not wait to be driving a screaming 283 again! Great story---hope your efforts are rewarded with a good runner. Should last way past those kids first licenses.

    Well, I have a 40 that's untouched in a dry barn. I'm also thinking of a T Bucket.

Here's the last photo sitting on the docks of an engine shop to be cleaned. It should be done today. Pretty excited to pick it up.

    Here's my first intake I had when I was 16. It's a GM part. #14044836

Thinking of using it.....but dual quads would be sweet!

Picked up the block and ready for grinding to smooth out the casting marks. Previous to dropping it off I ran a Roloc disk on the side of the block to see how well it would clean up after cleaning.
