Hey John, I just put in three more initial degrees, that's the biggest bushing that came with the MSD. So I have an even split at 18 degrees initial and 18 degrees mechanical. I also ran the valves and found only #7 exhaust to be loose, so that was good. The front shocks helped the 60 fts to go from 1.540 best to a 153.2 and 7.17 @ 95.27 in the 1/8
Wow, something really woke it up on the start. Think it is the front shocks or is it just leaving harder. Still running 92 octane? Try some race gas (maybe 105) and give it more lead. Another 2* on initial (20* initial) 38* total, and see what happens. If that is good try another 2*, 22* initial and 40* total. That should wake up the start more. Pay close attention to your plugs and watch the color. What do they say in fuel dragster circles? More lead, more fuel, equals more horse power. Or you can leave it just as it is and enjoy the heck out of it. How many more sessions are left until winter? Best of luck, John
What really got the front wheels off the ground was loosening the STOCK top shock nut. I backed it off about an inch from the top of the A-arm and double nutted it. Just that extra inch of travel gave the front end room to move, the stock shocks were just to short. Now with the longer drag shocks up front the suspension goes through complete travel and the front end raises a lot further. So much so it tops out the suspension before the shock. Leaving the line now (those were pictures of old shocks) it raises the front but not so much the wheels. I feel it lift the wheels but it doesn't seem to be as high as before, I might try some chain limiters to get the wheels higher. Those accelerator pumps really gave me the power down low to get things moving on the line though. We have only one race left which is Sept. 30th, anxious to see if the initial timing advance has an effect.
Thanks to the classifieds here, and a good friend for picking them up for me, I now have a fiberglass one piece front end and a pair of doors. This stuff is much lighter than the steel and was on a car in the past as a lift off not tilt. So over the winter I will replace the front clip, two doors and one quarter....wow
Hey Phil. Nice find. Front end looks to be in good shape. Nothing like losing weight to go fast. What does the car weigh now ?
It was 2360 without the hood so right at 2400, hood is light. I need to loose MY spare tire and then we could really be light weight ha ha
Your J looks Great,,, Nice Scoop on the Tilt front end too... I just bought a 53... Im not sure what to do with it at this point..
Just enjoy it and don't tie it up in long term down time........ I put the street tires and exhaust back on this last week Wed, took it to a cruise night that same night. Thursday took it to car club meeting, Friday adjusted the valves and bumped the timing up, Sat just drove it around. Monday I took my 8 year old to school in it, then later picked him up, Tuesday we went out for ice cream. Today I'm going to drive it some more before getting it ready for Sundays race.......just enjoy it !
ha ha I didn't forget about you, I have to build a wooden frame work to hang that front clip from the ceiling. Then, I can get to those brake parts for you.
i must have over done the CRY for the clips ..as no less than 5 people have stepped up with help. and then we found the rear drums were UN_ riveted and (hopefully) just need to be RE-riveted. if not will be lookin for rear drum / hub 's that are still in tact. no worries here swade41... in not catching any air on this build/ semi / restore? its been sitting (like an old barn find) for 15 years oops nope ,18 dang time, flies. thought i'd better drive it before i CAN'T..
problem cured all is well drove it today CST noonish 9-29-12 i am so sad i should did this 18 years ago. fun to drive.. almost caused 2 accidents from people rubber necking it.
Clunkers are Cool too... The best part about These cars, is I dont think many were tossed away.. they have survived well..
52 more post s on your thread swade41 and you'll have 55,555 now 51 more lol one of the most looked at and popular... on the HAMB people it's well worth your time to scan through ALL the pages here.
Well we've been through a few trying times with this car that's for sure. Blowing up engines to breaking axles and crashing into guard rails, now we are pulling wheelies. Where will the adventure lead us next ?...hopefully a 6 second time slip...lol
there's so many neet pictures of some of the changes, i wanted to save em all for desktops. all ready printed some for the wall... guess that was 55,559 - 55,560 lookers... folks there's a wealth of info here and swade41 is a informative and helpful as they come. SHOULD I change mine over to the DARK SIDE? and get some time slips ?
So you nabbed that front end before I found it. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat if it was still available. At least it's going on a worthwhile car. Devin
4 pedals wasn't there another one offered ... check ebay... i thought i saw another one... i'll go a LQQKin 4 (ya)
I had to watch Ryans old video again today for a little inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNX5h1yfNBQ
That is a cool video, no doubt about it ! First round looser again yesterday, the car runs real consistent in time trials with a 7.188 and a 7.189 Then first round it falls to a 7.28 facing my good buddy Art (550Coupe). I did a little math and these are the differences in 60 ft to 330ft 3.053 3.057 3.127 these are the differences in 330ft to 1/8mi 2.592 2.575 2.591 So not sure how to diagnose it but you can see it's something in that 60ft to 330ft time frame. Any ideas what this could be ?????? Other than that, got a picture of the new shocks in action and I guess they do work...lol
Looks real good. If track conditions stayed the same, then maybe.......I don't know. Did you change anything? Tire pressure? Did you overpower the track? Barometric change? Upped the nitro %? Perhaps shift too soon or too late? Anyway, is this your last chance this fall? Would like to see some 1/4 mile times. BTW, how did advancing the timing work out? John
had that happen more than once 9/10 am trials 2/3 pm elimination even the sunshine to one tire sometimes...
