Looks good Phil ! Put "Buffalo NY" at the bottom of the doors. I think......

  3. Thanks, I will put the doors back on the car and let it all soak in before deciding on the lettering. I still will need to layout the side panels on it as well, we'll see what jumps at me.

  4. Man I was about ready to kill someone from Krylon today. I wanted to clear the moon in "flat" clear and the sun in shiny clear, Krylon was the only one carrying a flat clear so I bought it.
That freaking can spit instead of spray and dotted up the whole freaking moon, man was I livid ! If a Krylon rep was handy I would have bashed that can through his head, man did that tick me off !
I ended up clearing the whole thing in shiny Rustoleum clear and it did even out the spit drops but not the look I was after. I think I will try and take the shine off with 000 steel wool or gray scotchbrite pads to get my dull moon back.
    Ok soapbox stowed away now.

How's it goin' Phil? Inquiring minds want to know.....

  6. Having some back issues lately but I bolted the doors up on the body and really like the size of the door art. It was one of those things doing it with doors off the car and kinda guessing what will look good.
I had the t-bucket out Sunday and Monday so enjoying a little piece of the warm weather we got. I used it to drop off the new 15x10 slots to get some curb rash tig'd up. Those should be done tomorrow, not putting them on right away though. I figure I'll make a pass or two with the old wheels and slicks and see what the rpms with the new gears will be. If I need to move to a taller slick then I'll put those on the wider rims.
Other than that I have come to the conclusion during these back episodes that I don't have enough time to change up the bike. I have decided to bolt the stuff back on that I stripped off and just ride this summer while I can...lol

  7. Mocked up the front clip, trying to get that all lined up so I can start the hinge building. Sometimes taking these pictures lets you get a further away perspective to see if the body line line up. I think I may stick with this and my fancy plates came in today.....hoooray !

    its LQQKing good

  10. Thanks, going slow that's for sure but I did get the inner brace/structure built for under the hood. I just need to weld the brackets to the frame and drill the hinge hole in both support rods. Trying to get one day in of working on it but then take the next two off to recoup, like I said slow going but we are going.

  11. Got the tilt and slide all mocked up and working. I have been thinking about a way to engineer this sliding hinge for what seems like a month, going over and over in my head how it can work. I was able to get all the pieces together tonight to finally try it out, this hinge is directly below where I had the last hinge but south about 2 1/2 feet.
Now of course since the pivot of the hinge is in a different spot, the rotational angle of the tilt is different. The last hinge slid forward about 4 inches but the leading edge of the front wheel well hit the tire, preventing it from tilting all the way forward.
This time I made sure it had plenty of slide in this setup, damnedest thing is, it barely needs any at all ! I swear I can tilt it forward without having to slide it, what the hell..lol
I used conduit to frame up the underside, keeping it tight enough to the body that I can glass it in without big gaps.

A couple angle brackets with a slightly over size hole for the other tubing to slide through. I will pin the back of the tubing to prevent it from sliding all way through of course.

Works pretty good and is a heck of a lot stronger than you would think. It tweaked a little during the welding and I had a heck of a time trying to bend it back into shape.

I plug and perimeter welded solid steel plugs up into the conduit to prevent it from wallowing a hole and ad strength. I burned up a couple new drill bits drilling that, I guess 1/2 inch solid steel is some tough shit.

That's it, I'm pretty stoked at how well it works and glad I can move ahead on other areas !

Hey Phil. Got to be nice to have that job behind you. As you know, that's one of those jobs you can spend a couple nights on and wind up throwing everything away and have to start all over from square one. Looks nice, simple and light. Little more welding and grinding, and you'll be able to get back on finishing the body and paint on the nose. Keep it fun. :)

  13. Man I was looking forward to finish welding this today but I can hardly get around. My back is jacked up, left at half day from work and just been gingerly doing things.
It's supposed to be 70 on Thursday/Friday and I hope I can get the fiberglass mat and resin on while it's warm enough to setup. Got to get moving on this and once this is done not much left to do except take it easy...lol

Hey Phil, it looks like I'm too late, but I just did a tilt-pivot setup on my Falcon gasser that works great. I also added Ranger PU tailgate cables to hold the frontend when it's fully open. Cheap and plentiful at the wrecking yard.
The bar on the pivot point has 3" centers, so when you lift the frontend it pivots over to move it 6" forward, then tilts open. This keeps my front pan from hitting the frame end.
Here's a pic of my setup. I also used EMT to build my framework, but mine is all steel. Wish I could find a glass frontend affordable!

  16. I like the use of the line clamp to hold the tailgate cables, nice idea.
I was lucky to find this front and doors pretty cheap but the front needs a bit of work to look decent. That's the way I roll around here though, I couldn't justify nor afford new stuff. I'm thankful to have what I have to say the least. Most people only have one nice car, hell I have a couple half way shitty ones...lol and a girl that's kind enough to go get DQ for me, life is good !

Nice job Phil. Will you be ready for the gasser racing series race in May? It would help your back to launch the J from the starting line a few times. It is known to be great therapy.:):D Seriously though, Hope your back gets to feeling better soon.

That's actually just 1/8"x1" flatbar I bent to go around the tube Phil. I wanted something thicker, and adjustable so I could slide it up or down to make both cables even.

  20. A few months ago I would have had no doubt it would be ready, now though ??? I guess the decision is to bring it out finished or not. I love the racing and can't wait to get back out there but I would like to bring a finished transformation I guess.
I stayed home from work today and am bored out of my mind knowing I could be doing something. I was thinking of trying to weld those brackets in laying down on my side...lol

Thanks, I just hope it all looks good in the end.

  21. Finally went to the back doc. and it seems I have a misaligned bulged disc which is pressing on the nerves. We are working on getting it back in alignment and getting back to whatever the norm is.
I need to get this body work done, I did glass in the sub structure and paint the under side of the front flat black. I also had glassed the old hood pin holes shut while I had the itchy stuff out.

I'm not a doctor and don't even play one on TV, but a Lat Machine has been an old friend to my back for over thirty years. Everytime my back acts up or I start getting that numbness and pain down the leg I get on the machine. It really helps stretch the spine out and pull me back into alignment.

  23. I hear ya, I got a basement full of workout equipment, used to be one of "those" guys before the injury. I have been using an inversion table for the last 4 years, the disc feels like it's heading back in the right direction. Onward and forward we will march !

  24. Slowly sanding this rock hard paint, first race was yesterday and kinda sucked not to be running. I need to get my ass in gear !

Hey Phil. Looks like you got a lot of the worst of it behind you. Use to bother me to when I went as a spectator when my car(s) wasn't ready, but now I look at it as a day I didn't break anything, or cost me any time and/or money. :)
You'll be ready in no time. Look forward to seeing the finished project.

Looks like you're the first guy to repaint it, and take the old paint off first! ;)

  27. If it wasn't chipped and cracked I might have did a paint over too...lol
I did take the t-bucket out to the track, little over an hours drive, pushed it a few times till the front end was floating. Nice to pull out on an old country road in the dead of night and lay into it, pipes playing a tune and second gear rubber piercing the quiet. Got into a little stop light to stop light action with a crotch rocket near the house, that was fun....lol

  28. Phil, you have come a long way! I really like the way the paint it turning out!!

  29. Dang Phil, pretty good visual!

Cool to see you painting the J in your garage, ... your one talented guy.

  30. Thanks and Sam maybe it's good to not see what's coming sometimes. I have no idea what this was but glad it didn't hit me in the head !
