Next up was moving the electronics since I moved the firewall and running all the wiring back through the new firewall and out to the engine bay, fun stuff. I bought new gauges so that ment I also needed to make a new gauge panel out of my favorite dental parking only sign.
I found another set of 427 M/T's that already had a breather in the same location I wanted to mount breathers to in my really nice practically nos 427 covers, so I got them to avoid drilling the nice ones. They looked rough but I knew they'd come around with some sweat equity and I definitely put some sweat into sanding and polishing them.
I decided to move the fuel tank from under the car to inside the car since under the car the wheelie bars are trying to take up the same spot. Moving it inside means I need a bulkhead to separate it from the passenger compartment so I started making patterns trying different arrangements. I thought a 3 piece design would work with the center removable so I can service the fuel cell if need be. That didn't work out so a new 2 piece pattern upper/lower seemed to work Transferred that over to aluminum and put together a homemade break to bend it up. Got the fit down pretty tight Currently working on a couple braces for support and making mounting tabs.
I'm going to steal the idea of the mounting bar for the fuel regulator. I'm doing a big block J my self. can't wait to get it done. Jim
Thanks for the update Swade. How about some X's bead rolled to those puzzle pieces. Like that they might shake rattle and roll quite annoying.
The upper half has to bend like a banana to go into place do to the shape of the car and rear window, so definitely can't put anything in that piece. I did think about putting something in the lower piece but I'm hoping the two vertical braces just on the inside of the roll bar tubes will quiet the rattle. I've also thought about gluing some inner tube rubber in the mounting points.
I've used that spot in the past on a couple different engines, just space it off the head so it doesn't get heat soaked. When you don't have inner fenderwells or bars off the roll cage out there you need to get creative.
nice I would think about eliminating the power valves in the 2 x 4s and up-jet about six sizes to compensate.
^^^^ Man that sure looks good. Yea mine doesn't have fender wells either. I used 62-67 Nova big block fender well headers and had to make room for the drivers side don't know why but had too. It's not a stock fire wall either. they are making M/T valve covers again got a set of those. Jim
I blocked off the secondary power valve in the other original carb to match the new carb that doesn't have provisions for a rear. I'll see how it goes and adjust accordingly while tuning things in, I tend to keep at them until they are right.
I just piddle away a couple hrs a day (or week) I'm trying to live a stress free life here ya know. Having multiple projects and jumping around between them, nothing major seems to get done towards the goal of having them "finished" per say, but the more I do today means there's less to do tomorrow. After this fuel cell/bulkhead/cutting a hole in the body for fuel inlet debacle it'll need : battery relocated and wired brake lines made couple fuel lines from cell to filter made transmission lines made lower radiator hose sorted out (pain in the ass) gas pedal located (pain in the ass) throttle linkage exhaust Hopefully it'll run, then sort out the new car blues, how do these guys build these cars in an hour on these TV show lol
I ended up collecting a set of 15x11 and 15x10 slots in 5x4.75 pattern So I pulled the axles and sent them back to Moser to get redrilled to 5x4.75 with screw in studs in 1/2 inch ford size. I redrilled the drums myself, pulled the street tires off the old ford pattern 15x10's and put them on the 11's Bolted them up and for the first time I have the same bolt pattern front and rear, now the only one that still has a miss match of bolt patterns is the t-bucket. Still need to order different lug nuts and get the 29x11 slicks swapped around.
Thanks, slow and steady progress Not looking forward to cutting a hole in the body for that fuel neck but it's getting close to the time to start planning it out and ordering parts. I have to look up the NHRA rules on flip top caps too, I think I remember that they have to have a positive locking mechanism to be legal. Something like this https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Smal...AfE4N9EeWXqtQvlDZ_ITBuuOwW1MYSIhoCJWAQAvD_BwE Or this maybe https://blueteksupply.com/products/...YX7aUGiGeGKqyvLxG-AZHeoL4ocYCpkRoCP6AQAvD_BwE
My mind starts spinning when I see something like that. I thought how cool would it look if you were able to get the monogram from the horn button into the center of that gas cap. A little tribute to before it was a race car.
Interesting idea, to be honest I've never seen a stock Henry J, so that's a first seeing the the big K.
I've been making a gas cap out of some kind of coupler I bought for $5 bucks at a swap meet, I capped it off with a domed glass lense and made a couple different inserts to fit inside.
I got a piece of aluminum 2 inch pipe to serve as a filler tube, didn't fit so I expanded it over a trailer hitch ball and hammered a lip up top.
I ordered an RCI 45 degree filler neck, it came in and it was indexed crooked when welded on, that'll throw things off kilter. I didn't have any tubing that was a tight fit to the fill neck to mark the location of the gas cap so I improvised with some pvc. This won't give me an exact location since the blind man welded it on all catawompus, but at least it'll give me the height of it. Then I marked center on the outside of the body in preparation for cutting a big damn hole in it.
After measuring 10 ways from Sunday I marked my hole location Picked up a 2 1/4 hole saw to sneak up on the 2 3/8's hole I need And cut a big ass hole in my body All that measuring paid off, filler neck cap is straight down the pipe I'm digging it, now to order a 2 inch to 1 3/4 inch fuel hose to connect the two
Updating some photos of making a removable scoop so I have options for different looks, reversed the flange on the Shelby GT350 so it looks better and added a filler piece on the rear. Sure it's a 427 ..... uh-hmmmm ... wink wink 10-32 button head fasteners hold it on
