Finally started the 56. Posted it on the main board so I could embed the video in the thread. Still lots to do to get it on the road but for now it's running. Here's the link. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=627742
Sounds great! Baggs just fired His up so hopefully we will have another sound bite on the way, some folks think 289-302's don't have the sound of a Y-block,but they have a great sound of their own I am running Cherry Bombs on my 302 what are you going to run?
Jeff, how do the Cherry Bombs sound? I bought some for mine but the guy at the muffler shop wants to use Flowmasters.
I have gotten compliments on the sound,I didn't want it super loud so I ran 22" Cherry Bombs just ahead of the rear axle it has a deep rumble with an angry snarl when you rev it,this is close: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sChATV4vOvA Thanks to youtube you can listen to an ***ortment of mufflers online,as for the Flowmasters they just don't belong on a 50's Ford you would probably get bashed big time on the main board for even suggesting them.Scroll down a bit on the same page for the sound of Purple Hornies.A lot of guys also like the Porters and I think they are a HAMB Alliance Vendor,I always liked the sounds of Smittys but lately I have seen comments on other forums about them falling apart in a short time period, kind of sounds like FRAM develop a good following and then turn it into junk to make a profit.Back in the 60's & 70's this was my muffler of choice http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-WALKER-CONTINENTALS-1964-FORD-MERCURY-W-SINGLE-EX-/380340056029 best sounding gl***pack ever! Walker bought out THRUSH and but the shape of the Walker Gl***pack is like the Continentals used to be,here is the sound on a 302 Ford http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNKMWkVxdrY&feature=related
I had Cherry Bombs on my 55 with a Y block and they sounded really good . I have used Cherry Bombs since they started way back when . When I put my 302 in my 55 I am going to try 3 different gl*** mufflers that I have for the sound I want . I have Cherry Bomb , round Dyna max and Smithys to test out . Placement of the muffler will also change the sound out the end too . There are a lot of different things that will change the sound of the exhaust and you will have to just figure out what sounds best for you . The best way to come close to the sound you want is to go to car shows and listen to how cars sound . If you find one you like , ask the owner . They are always happy to tell you anything about their car ! BTW , I HATE the sound of Flow master Mufflers ! I just don't want my car to sound like a Mustang ! Just my opinion ! Jim
