I think the 50 tags are supposed to be bare with red numbers.

  2. Looks great Bob, yes plates are outta hand price wise (at least '47 and '51) and tabs are getting there too. Bob are the plate numbers good?, that combo is a new commercial plate combo. I've been lucky over the past few vehicles, the '47 plates I had for about 4 years and the '51 commercial plates were such an odd combo that the numbers didn't get used. If I find cheap plates with odd combos I get them, never know when you can use or trade them. I'm not going to restore the '51 or the '36 plates (they look good enough to use as is), but I had to restore the '47 to use them. I also made my house number from an old plate.

I don't run the tabs on the '47 but I did make a tab that holds both stickers for the '54 as I'm going to drive it daily though Irvine . I do have a YOM set for the '64 panel but haven't registered it with them yet.

Are the plates steel or aluminum?, you might just rub a rag on them to cut down on the shine.

  3. When I went to register mine here in Indiana, They had to show a person who makes the call wether it's good enough. I said I could take it home and repaint it, she said then it would be s****. They won't allow you to do anything but clean them here. If u restore/repaint them. You can't use it.

Looks great Bob ! Hope everything goes smooth for you with the DVM

Some of the 49 tabs have the prison name they were made at stamped on the back. Some year "YOM" plates are correct having only the rear tab. Some have no tab. Some have the tab on the window. Some have only one plate. Looks like in 49 they used both front and rear http://www.davesclp.com/california.htm

Are the plates steel or aluminum?[/QUOTE]

They made some 47 plates out of steel and some out of aluminum.

I found a pair of Ohio "County Car" plates at a Kentucky antique mall for 1931. In the process of restoring to see if BMV will let me use them!! I have never seen another set like them.

I need a set of those for my 48. You better not leave yours unattended for too long...Ha !

  8. just make sure you get a guaranty to be clear or call the dmv first, lots of non clear plates being sold out there ('47/'51). I don't have any '48 tabs but I like the early blue plates anyhow......anyone can buy a YOM remember :D.

  9. thats also why all my cars have tamper resistant bolts and nuts on the plates :D.

  10. Tags are lookin good, wish we could do that here!

Yes they are a good/clear set. I think they are aluminum. They were in really bad shape,or I would have just run them as is. I think the condition of my Merc warrented restoring them. The '38 plates on my truck are old looking, which goes with my truck,so I didn't have oldpl8s restore them.

When I decided to put them on the Merc,I went to the DMV and made sure they were clear. She did tell me that they were in too bad of condition to put on the car though, and that I would have to re-paint them first. One had been folded in half! I straightened them as best I could before giving them to oldpl8s,then he finished them up real nice. They aren't perfect, but I told him I didn't want them spotless. Don't think they could have been done any better anyways....They looked like someone had repainted them once before.

Why is this? What if you bought a car that year, or brought one into CA to register it there?

They gave you a '47 plate and a '49 tag to put on it.

found this website that can take your modern plate numbers and make YOM replicas:D www.licenceplates.tv

  20. california stopped give new plates every year in '45 (I believe) and the went to metal tabs, then stickers. It's just like now, you bring a car in, they give you new white plates with the new month and year stickers.

It's NOT like the original (I have one) the shape is good but the font style and sizes are off a little bit.

YOM plates are the ulitimate finishing touch, 100 times better than the "antique" or "historical" plates that many states offer.. In California especially from 1956-62 (yellow) amd 1963-70 (black) be sure you pick a correct letter combination that begins with your year (i,e, if you have a 1956 Belair don't get a plate that begins with T, U, V, etc. it should begin with A or B), likewise if you have a 1962 Buick it shouldn't begin with a B or C.. The DMV will accept any letters, but the correct letter is always more impressive and historically correct.. In Kansas always choose the correct county you live in for your plate.. don't know about the other states, sorry..

Right, "black plates" were the last California plates the DMV would let you keep, evidently all pre-1963 plates were retrieved by the DMV and replaced with the 1963 black plate.. this is why all 1950s and earlier cars carried Black plates after 1963.. My Moms 56 Belair was a black GNU 466, and I have a pic of my dad's 54 Crestline with a yellow plate, but the picture is from 1962.. after that it wore a black plate..

www.licenceplates.tv plates look pretty good, but as stated earlier the fonts are off slightly. They are made of aluminum so the DMV clerk will probably not accept them. They are fine for replacements if you are missing a plate that is already registered so you don't need to have the DMV hag actually handle the plates. There are a few guys making frames for the old sized Cal plates that have indentations to put your stickers. That looks better than the little tabs the DMV is supposed to give you.
Don't put stickers on the plates, that ruins the old look you are trying to achieve.

As of Sept 1, Texas no longer allows new registrations of YOM plates :-(. If you already have them, you're grandfathered and can renew them, but no more new ones. I got mine lined out Aug 15th, the actual, original plates from 1956!

Looks good Bob. I ran personalized plates on the 32 for years before I went to YOM.
I keep the stickers in a pocket behind the seat. No h***les yet. I'm not running the front plate though, must be the rebel in me. ;)
    Get your paperwork back yet?
For those who are in California- lots of guys selling plates will lie & tell you they are DMV clear. There's an 1-800 number you can call in Sacramento that will tell you in 5 minutes if the plates are good or not.

Think your plates were expensive, step into the world of restored 1932 plates.

Most plates IMO are too glossy. Mine are not glossy. I don't know how "correct" they are but looks better to me than shiny plates. Many repainted plates also fail on the correct "yellow" color.
I've had several early Ford restorer types come up & ask me where I found a set of new-old plates. Works for me.

you have to use a plate that goes with the year of the car. I think it would be cool if they opened it up where you could put the 56 plates on pre 56 cars,,, but I am not in charge....YET.
