I have done many searches and gone to a bunch of websites, to no avail. So I am hoping someone on here can help me id this rear. 1946 dodge pickup. I pulled it out of my aunt's land where it has been for 35-45 years (last plate says Farm Truck 1965). I would like to try to re-use the rear, but before I can find parts for it or determine if it is usable, I need to figure out what it is. So here is a few pics. Thanks for the help in advance.[IMG]

Looks to me to be the stock rear for that P/U. Doubt much in the way of parts are available for it ,other than maybe bearings, seals. Unless you are restoring it to stock you will be money/time ahead to get a modern rear axle.

Yeah not restoring, but am concerned with time and money ofcourse. thought if i could find out if it is a Dana 44 for example (not saying it is) then I could find parts for it and rebuild it cheaper than buying a more modern axle, and then having to rebuilding it. But if I can't get parts for it then you are right, not worth it.

Is this a Dana rear of some sort?

doesnt look like a dana 44 too me,looks like it was a tube drive shaft and i doubt your going find to many parts for it. try finding a company that deals with old dodge pickups they might have a rebuild kit for it though

Dana 44 is a rear-load differential, with a sheetmetal cover that looks linda like home plate. It does not have a drop-out or front-load center section.

That could be an early Mopar 8 3/4 rear end.

Thought the 8 3/4 wasn't out until 1957? I guess it could be but looking at the condition of the rear compared to the rest of the truck, it really looks like it is probably the original. But if the shoe fits, I'll stop complaining about what year it was made.

  7. just put a later B body or truck rear end in it....we won't tell....
