I'm with ya on the fun factor being sucked out-a -ya if your in the industry. I concidered Art Center but instead followed the cartoon/illustration path. As it turned out, at least 4 of my coworkers left the auto industry in favor of animation for that very same reason. One guy is an incredible designer who was designing headlights and/or interior components; Ya-Hoo!!!
