FINALLY released my '40 Ford from storage purgatory

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 40panel348, Feb 21, 2012.

  1. Well, since I sold the Caddy and actually have a little cash left, I figured I would finally try and get my '40 Panel going. I bought it for $400 in 2003, and it has been in storage ever since. The 348 is not going in it now, since I don't have the $$$ to have it build yet, but I do have a 283 that was a runner sitting on the engine stand, so that will have to do for now. I am also not going to use the '57 Pontiac rear I have for it for the same $$$ issues, instead I'm going to pick up a '57 - '59 Ford 9" from a junkyard near here. The only other major pieces I need are a parallel leaf kit for the rear and a spring to fit the narrow dropped Super Bell axle I scored for $300 a few years back. I also want some wide whites on chrome steel wheels. I'll post progress pics as it comes together, but here are the humble beginnings..............

Let me know if you need any parts. My father in law has a shell (in rough shape) with a few parts on it yet. Looks like a damn nice truck for $400.00!!

Wow, You got a great deal in '03 on your '40. Those rear doors alone are worth the price of admission. Will be following the build, neat panel.

  5. Thanks! I may just find myself needing something.

Kinda hung up on $300 for a cast iron 'Super' Bell... but the deal you got on the Sedan Delivery is Gadzooks! (that means a good deal)

  7. Well, it is brand new and fully chromed, and I think they sell for twice that... Since you can't really see it under a low '40, I have actually thought about selling it and buying a plain one so I have have little extra cash for the project.

Why it looks like you have the wrong seat for that truck there! That is a 40 or so front Tudor or Jump-seat Coupe seat and totally incorrect for your truck. You can send it to me and start looking for the little bucket seats that panel trucks and sedan deliveries originally came with.
Greta project, looks complete and I wouldn't want to be hunting 40-41 Panel parts these days. Each of those back doors and fenders are likely worth what you paid for the truck. Enjoy the build, love those panels!

  10. Hell if your good enough to find the panel for $400.00 finding a running 348 for $50.00 should be a breeze !

  11. Good luck with the build. Looks like a good start and the price was right!!

That would be very cool to get the 348 in there someday. You've got some real good nose parts too, I'm jealous. Get busy...:)

  13. Very cool! love the '40, and for $400 what a deal!

  14. I already have the 348 out of a 60 Impala with a tripower, but I had to give $600 for that. It needs to be gone through, which is the expensive part.

WOW! what a deal. that thing really looks solid. keep the pics of your progress coming

  16. The body is actually pretty nice, especially considering I got it in Jersey. It was actually a delivery truck for a laundry back there. One of the back doors has a bunch of dent puller holes, but it's fixable. All of the original wood is still there on the inside. I do want to remove the tire well from the passenger side and smooth it out to match the drivers' side. The hood is almost mint and the rear fenders are extremely nice also.

This looks like a fun project and you got all the parts to boot plus some. I agree with smoothing the spare tire too.

Love sedan deliveries ... back when I was a kid there was a speed shop from New Jersey that raced 2 58 Chevy sedan deliveries. LAW Performance. Named "Special Delivery One" and "Special Delivery Two".

I think that spare tire mount is cool, never seen one like that before.
