In the past, building Chevrolet engines I have used Compe***ion Products (Wisconsin based) and been happy with their parts and service but.....they don't have much for Big Block Fords. I'm building a 62 F100 Unibody and using a truck 460 and would like to find a vendor(s?) similar to Compe***ion Products that cater to the Blue Oval. I know it would have been easier to us an LS but I needed a change Thanks in Advance
I’m all for it, but I do hope you plan for a serious upgrade to the brakes and suspension also, my puny 292 gives my drum brakes and suspension all they can handle and then some
There are parts for Ford engines...but you probably have to shop around. What in particular are you looking for? Stock replacement parts? Performance parts? Brackets/accessories for the engine swap?
Are you looking for new or used 460parts? Because if you type in 1000 hp bbf in google it lights up with all suppliers you could need. A set of Boss 429 heads sure would be nice on that old Ford! Sumitt and Jegs will have the basic hotrod parts for the 460 including stroker kits and heads.
thanks for the quick replies, I've spent a little time on the 460 forum but always feel the info on the HAMB is pretty decent (i.e. trustworthy) ....Disc brake conversion was already done and seemed to work well when I drove the five miles home with the weak SBF engine. The suspension needs to be rebuilt and I will add power steering because I could barely park it with the comparably light SBF engine. Since I am "cost conscious" I doubt I will be shooting for 500 horsepower but it will need "some" parts I am sure (after finding zero compression in two cylinders). Just trying to educate myself on Ford Engines since I haven't touched one since the sixties. I bought an entire 77 F250 so I have all the brackets/etc so I won't have to chase those parts.
If building a driver and plan on a few thousand miles a year I would steer away from the 4.500 stroke 460’s. Unless you get the correct rods and block a good portion of the wrist pin is hanging out the bottom not to mention the short compression distance piston for your rings to seal properly. Stay with a 501 (4.15 stroke) or a 521 (4.30) stroke for less maintenance.
For what it is worth....I won't be doing a stroker motor, 460 cubic inches are a lot more than the 302 that I took out My wife wants me in the shop but not on a fat budget
Sometimes doing a stroker is the same or less than a rebuild depending on rod conditions and kit prices.
At this point I am not sure what I will need, the engine is on the floor, I suspect the heads will have to be reworked and if I am lucky just rings and bearings for the short block. I'd be surprised if the cam and lifters are good so there is that possibility, I know there is a LOT that I don't know about this style of engine. I've had good luck with Howard Cams' roller units so I would probably lean that way. In the past is was easy to go the Performance Comp web site....click it and what I needed would show up in a few days, luckily the machine shop that I work with is owned by a Ford guy so he will give me some guidance
