Sneekin' in the drive in in the trunk? How about in the engine compartment? In high school my '56 Chevy Bel Air had quite the space in front of the radiator (V8 radiator behind the brace,6cly radiator in front of the brace) , big enough for an individual to get in free. So we're parked at the drive-in and I go to the back to let the guys outa the trunk and one of them goes around front and opens the hood. Yep the place went wield.

  2. That's nearly as believable as the Coke bottle in the quarter panel tale. Dealer installed bootlegger tanks............criminey!!! I though those came much later in the Pontiac Goolies:rolleyes:

  3. There was a factory fresh air vent on the 63 1/2 Falcon on the passenger side that had a door,,huge amount of space to stash...whatever. HRP

    62 Olds Dynamic 88 (My 1st car):
    1. Remove phillips screw underneath the steering wheel hub, pull the hub off, nice little secret compartment. Keep a stubby scredriver in the ashtray.
    2. Lift trunk floor liner to reveal a huge oval compartment, complete with drain holes.

My first car was a 64 Impala SS, 300/327, Powerglide and PosiTraction. I'd had the car for awhile when I noticed a little panel in the console. Bumped it with my hand and a hinged hidden compartment just the right size for cigarettes or whatever(hey, it's 1970) opened up..

  7. In 1980 I drove my 38 Chevy coupe from Seattle to LA, San Diego, and Tijuana. We did Disneyland Knott Berry Farm etc. In Tijuana I purchased 20 M-80 firecrackers and hid them in-between the wood floor and metal lower floor where the gas tank is located. Good thing they didn't use dogs that could find drugs and fireworks back then

Most cop cars now have a seamless abs plastic back seat so there is nowhere to hide contraband.

Back in the 70's my Dad and his buddys would load all their dirt bikes on my Dads 71 GMC 1 ton flatbed and park it at the border and they usually rode down to Ensenada. They would load up on firecrackers and would pack them into the floor vent ducts that had the manual dampers. Fortunately no one at the border ever opened the vents to check.

My Dad had an old Chevy truck that the fresh air vent never would work, finally opened it up one day and found an old rusty .38 special wrapped up in a bandana....

  12. We were restoring a 55 T bird for a customer and when we removed right and left door sill covers there were holes cut in the rockers for stashing stuff. Cuts looked like they were made with an old can opener. Jagged as hell....

There was a Buick dealer here in Kemmerer, Wyoming who would beef up the rear springs in "All Makes, All Models" with the aid of one of the local blacksmiths during Prohibition, under the guise of "Spring Repair". It was a wide open town in what was still the wild west then. Never heard of them installing tanks, THAT may have been beyond the pale.
Task Force Chevy trucks, and '73-'87's too, have a reinforcement panel behind the seat that is spot welded to the back cab panel, that made a great spot for vegetation that we carried in baggies, way back in the day. 1960 Buicks had a large area between the inner fender and the headlights, ala' "The French Connection". I would imagine most hiding areas have, at one time, been discovered by a law enforcement agency somewhere.

A bit OT, but in the 80's a buddy had a body shop. I stopped in one day to B.S. and there was a late model Chevy truck apart being painted . . . and it had two forward bed panels. The second panel was welded in about 3" back from the stock panel. The trick was the truck had a fiberglass topper. The front of the topper had been cut out and moved back 1.5 inches with a flat panel across the bottom.

When the truck was all together, if you looked in from the tailgate it looked like and empty truck bed. If you looked between the back window of the truck, and the front window of the topper, it looked normal. The window was in fact recessed a little bit back into the topper, but not enough that anyone would notice.

The result was a space about 18" x 60" x 3". Never knew who owned it.

Back in the '60s I found that there was enough room between the grille and radiator on my '57 Chevy to put a case of beer. It was a twenty mile drive home from the store and the beer would chill down nicely by the time I got home.

I had a '51 Ford in high school, and there were fresh air vents that exited under the dash with round covers on them. Just right to stash a fifth of whatever you had.

  17. amodel25, a little OT but your statement brought back a funny memory for me - Scrub Hansen had a condom under the clear plastic center cover in the steering wheel in one of his cars along with a little engraved sign - "Driver's Side Airbag"

It was mentioned before but that triangular spot behind the passenger kick panel in early bugs save my buddy's ass once right after high school. The dog was too busy sniffing the ashes in the ashtray to pick up on the bong and baggy in the floor.

A friend of a friend bought a '70s Vette from a DEA auction several years ago. One of the windows wouldn't roll down right so he opened up the door to fix the winder and found some strange white bricks that went in the fire pit real quick.
