Customs Finished painting. Not for the ANTI satin black crowd

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Sep 7, 2009.

  1. Well I finally finished the paint job on my car. Some of you may have followed this thread from last week and remeber I had some major setbacks and frustrations.
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=393243

As time passed and the paint set up and kind evened itself out. I can live with it. I just tell myself it is the first car I've ever painted and I did it all myself! It has more boogers in it than a playground full of firstgraders but it still looks good. So Saturday I spent about 10 hrs laying out and masking the scallop pattern. I kinda borrowed part of the design from CFish50Chevy (sorry Chad). I finnaly got them sprayed about 10 on Saturday night. After tossing and turning all night I peeled off all the masking yesterday morning. WOW!! it looked nice. You can't see the mettalic in the pics but it really sparkles. I need to pinstripe them. What do you think red or white??
I also picked up a set of WW's from a local HAMB'r (thanks Gary) and threw them and the 57 Caddy caps on this morning and rolled her out for the first time.

I would really like to thank all of those whos help and encouragement got me to this point. There is NO WAY I would be here without you.

    Here are some pics.

It looks good. Nice job. The owner can always see the imperfections that the other 99% of us will never notice. How about another color for striping the scallops? Like purple.

I have never owned a black car but I still think it looks good. Did you use flake in the white or a pearl? I like the layout of the scallops. Car looks really good. The reason everyone paints their car black is -it looks good. Good job!

That looks great! The best part is you can say you did it yourself.Congrats...I would go red for the stripes.

  8. I think that you did a very good job and the scallops set it all off really well. I've always liked those bodies in dark colors so I'm partial to them in black. I've owned two early fifties Chevies, one dark grey and one white and yours looks better than either of them did.

  9. Actually the scallop paint is a GM gold color that was used on wheels back in the 80's. You really have to see it in person in the sun for the flake in it to really pop out. I spend a couple of hours at the paint shop looking at chips for the right color of gold. Gold is kind of a strange color. It goes from almost yellow to almost tan. I knew what I wanted in my head but I just had to keep looking to find the right shade. Todd

    That is the dog's f'n bollocks! :)

I don't know how many people took notice, but I think one of the greatest things about your car (other than the quality work that you've put into it) is that you have had a *clear* vision of what it was going to be, and you have followed through 100%. I hope that mine turns out half as good....and that's if I'm lucky!

Oh...and regarding the color for the stripes....hopefully no revolt will come of this...but I think that a burnt orange would look nice in moderation.

Don't worry about the imperfections man!
You've taken the plunge and the car looks great for a first time job...even for a 3rd or 4th actually!
You have some experience to work off of next time, so NOW you can make some improvements on the next job.
Thats how you learn hands on!!!
Awesome car and thumbs up for having the gonads to give a hard job a good try.

  19. No I didn't do anything. Like I said I non't know shit about painting but after a couple of days of curing the "blotches" and other shit went away for the most part. I don't know the curing process for paint. My guess is once all the shit evaperated, cured or whatever enamel does it found an even keel. I'm content with it know.

I hesitated to come into this thread for fear I was not welcomed. :D But alas...

Looks good! Glad everything turned out well, the scallops look great. Once it has a few rock chips and gets driven some I bet you'll forget about anything you still don't like, and if not, repaint it!

Looks great. I like scallops on customs and flames on hot rods. My vote for the outline stripping is red or possibly lime green as jerseymike suggested.

I must have a bad mind or something....
You, a 30 year "PROFESSIONAL" automotive graphics painter, are not really busting the chops of a FIRST TIMER...because he chose a simple to apply graphics technique as a decoration to his FIRST paint job!?!?!?

    Man...I'm blown away.....

    Even YOU...had to start somewhere.

nice job. looks really good for a home-made paint job.

  28. Thanks for all the positive comments. Well almost all positive. It came out much straighter than I thought it would too. I replace both inner and outer rockers, both forward qtrs, both lower door skins, and the right rear corner was bashed in. Todd

Yes ,I had to start somewhere, and to tell you the truth it was something a lot simpler thanwhat Tugmaster did. Actually, the scallop pattern he chose was'nt that simple ,as he had to do quite a lot of measuring to get it all to match up. Not an easy task and from the pics it looks like he was pretty successful, congrats. As for future comments ,I'll try to remember that some people are a little thin skinned .

Just try to remember that a Professional like yourself is looked up to and your opinion really matters.
A negative response from someone such as yourself is a real smack in the face to someone just starting out...and you know he didn't deserve it.

Maybe you were having a bad day...it happens!
No harm...you fixed it well! ;)
