small modifications needed drilled choke plate to access the vacuum pod allen screw.used a little longer adjusting screw on the fast idle cam.the screw was runnung out of adjustment and binding the spring before it got where it needed to be .adjustment to the fast idle screw is hard to access with the vacuum pod in place .hopefully when it is set it up that will be that. sin e

one step forward a small step back.was watching a utube vid by nicks garage.he advised using a well tuned carb for the vehicle for cam break in.so ive the carb back on and will get the motor running and set the idle mixture screws and idle before removing it and storing it while the work continues.fuel line is stiff so ill get a fresh line tomorrow.

small question no picture at the moment.my truck uses the original gauges.mechanical temp gauge recon by jim carter trucks.the bulb screws into the manifold through an adapter.it has allways lost a little coolant here.im tempted to smear a little permatex black on the threads.how is it sealed there was no permatex black back in the day.thanx in advance chris

  5. the nut on the bulb has a flat spot that seats into the adapter. a little sealer would not hurt

no sign of the idle mixture screw seals, they are overdue.started stripping the motor down..i used STAGE 8 header bolts.none of the bolts were loose but none were very tight either.small traces of the exhaust gasket blowing.but i wasnt aware of it until strip down. i trimmed down a modified holley tv cable bracket for easier removal. because the carb is an early demon i had to modify/ make my own cable mounting brackets .tomorrows another day (edited post)

now ive the balancer and pulleys off i can measure up for a tool to prevent the balancer turning to tighten the crank nut up. a few years backi purchased an ARP cranknut with a 1/2pocket to take a 1/2 ratchet direct one of my better purchases.just like the balancer remover/install tool.paid for themselves again

so the crank nut came off with the impact gun.i dont want to use that to tighten the nut back up.i want to be more precise,so i started working on a tool to lock the pulleys up while i torque the nut up.think its gona work pics to follow as i make progress.visited the scrap metal yard and purchased some 6mm plate for a reasonable price.a little surface rust but its cleaning up nice

my crank lockup tool.dics bolts to pulleys /balance spacers welded to disc .plate bolts to spacers.nuts weld to plate.long spanner sits on welded bolts to stop everything rotating.1/2 inch welded bolts through drilled m5 body washer stops bolt falling off during the torqing process.needs welding maybe fine tuning and painting.can use to tighten or loosen crank nut .thanx mick for the spacers P8020009 - Copy.JPG P8020012 - Copy.JPG

1 st mockup says it will work with modifications..as it is the plate is trying to run through the anti-roll bar.solution is to bend the plate to clear the roll bar, move the end of the plate 1" farther away from the pulley.or cut the plate insert 1" square box and bolt weld the lot together.let me see.whether i bend the plate or cut it ill loose an inch in height either way,but it will work either way.

finally the crank lock up tool is together just need to add paint.thank to my good friend mick for the welding and the spacers.just gave it a trial run everything fits and it works.drilled a 10mm hole to hang it from the rafters on a hook.it could spend a lot of time there.two piece design works well.easier to screw the top half to the pulley then bolt the bottom section later less weight at the one time plus the 1" holes make it easy to hold. upload_2024-8-20_20-57-13.jpeg .

well today started reassembly.the biggest problem here is the time lag between ordering parts and recieving them..plus theres no point in rushing headlong into ordering bits that might not fit.ordered and recieved the parts i needed.fitted the cam today.using assembly lube ,new gaskets and bolts where needed.meant to soak the lifters overnight in oil but it didnt happen.ill do it tomorrow need to get the head away to get the valves ground..theres loads to be done its the end of sept now it will be another month before its a runner again.put very little miles up this year.hopefully next year will be better.ill be back

feels like i turner the corner today.starting to replace some parts drained the oil.cold oil takes a while to drain down ,gave it plenty of time.new oil filter and break in oil on the shelf..torqued up the cam sprocket bolts ,new french locks and new locktite .doing it by the book.

continued today where i left off yesterday.cleaned off the gasket from the timing cover.the crank seal needed to be replaced .no bother theres another in the gasket set.there was but it wouldnt fit.too big the seal that came out is an oddball size.not what i expected from vics finest cover.anyway seals kits are available 16 dollars plus 48 shipping.i hope it wont leak, after sanding and filing the outside edge of it.pulled out my stainless allen screws and fitted them along with the summit adjustable timing tab.balancer is sitting in situ waiting to be fitted.nipped the sump back up.then realised i hadnt poured any oil on the timing chain.ill try to squirt some from the lifter valley tomorrow.head must be ready to go by monday evening.thats the plan

did a bit today.pushed the balancer on but wouldnt you know the adapter stayed in the crank .its locktighted in the installer now and letting it sit overnight.polished the face of the timing cover before the waterpump goes back on.last time i used the pullers i had the same problem but the balancer installer wont go in the case with an adapter on it.when i get this out its going together with loctite 270,ill use another box.
cleaned off gaskets and fitted the fuel pump.todays the first time i used a bolt to hold the pump pushrod up out of the way.worked well.an arkward job at the best of times with those fat fenders in the way even with access through the grille and the rad in the bed.
