I just payed my gpa off and picked up a newly 1/2 restored 49' custom fordoor. I have a bunch of stuff to weed out... Besides some of the 100% original parts that are not working today when I was making a parts list I noticed... That this front pipe was cut and it looks like someone put expanding foam in it to plug it.... The pipe right up front. Any help would be a real help more pics coming soon. Also! Anyone know where to locate a repop or original working clock? Thanks Jonny Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App on my iPhone.
well Jonny that is the exhaust cross over pipe. Someone maybe put dual exhaust on it you need to get it welded were the foam is, if it don't have duals I have no clue.
The pipe around the front connected the right and left exhaust manifolds, giving you a single exhaust pipe. You can cap off the drivers side and get a dual exhaust left side in order to run dual exhausts or just get both sides correct for duals. I remember back in the 50s NONE of the clocks worked very long. Vibration, I suppose. I sure wouldnt spend money trying to get one in working condition
Do you still need the pipe? I am assuming that you still need it what I would do is to get some gas, acetone, epoxy thinner, etc. and take the pipe off and pour whatever you choose down the pipe and it will melt it out. It works the same way like you see with home made napalm (styrofoam and gas) and what I would do is once the most of it is out take some clean gravel and put the gas or whatever else in the pipe and have the pipe capped off and shake/slosh it around with the rocks to clean the walls of the pipe. then let it dry and clean it really good then weld where the pipe was cut if it needs it.
?????? Just take the pipe off and throw it away.Cap the open manifolds if you have duals If it has foam in it, it will burn out when the engine is running
Yeah that would be pretty simple if I had my tools handy. Might just take the flange that connects and trace it on some steel and have a shop in DT cut an make a block plate. I haven had time to really run through everything but I know there are going to be a lot of damn fixes. Paint looks good. Interior is a 10 And it starts and drives. But everything else needs some tlc. Jonny Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App on my iPhone.
I am no expert on flathead engines by any means. But isnt this the same style of crossover pipe like for the ford y-blocks? In that is takes the exhaust from the drivers side exhaust manifold and routes it over to the passenger side then out through a single exhaust pipe? If that is the case could it cause damage to the engine if you are trying to run the engine and one bank of cylinders were blocked off? So no exhaust were to escape but you were still trying to bring in fresh air and fuel? It would make sense to me that with one bank that is essentially blocked off would not and could not produce power. It could theoretically cause damage to your pistons, rods, rings, and bearings from all of the excessive load placed upon those parts on that side of the engine. I am no expert by any means though. But I am certified to rebuild aircraft piston engines and have rebuilt a few of them and I have lost count of how many engines that I have built for cars.
you are kinda right. Since someone blocked off the crossover the assumption here is that the car has duals
