I set a box of kleenex on fire once. I also set a box of matches on fire. both were on the work bench. Since then I moved my shop, and have a separate room where I do the grinding/welding, and keep combustibles out of it. And once I caught dry gr*** on fire, I was grinding outside on the concrete in front of the shop.
I've done the stupid grinding next to the tablesaw mistake, wood dust everywhere. Instant combustion. I also combusted Converse sneakers while welding.
my hair many times. and ive lost many a pair of pants due to fire and the subsequent ******* of oneself
was grinding in the shop on the 54F100 went in for supper and when I came back there was a haze in the shop. Could not find any thing. worked till 10:00 ( city noise ordanices ) and on a lark put the bench seat that was sitting on the other side of the shop from where I was grinding out side. You guessed it , the next morning there was only the metal left on the seat and a affuk smell out side. I was lucky that time.
I usually just set myself on fire. Rule of thumb I go by: metal ain't normally in a state of cherry red or brighter..... anything you're doing to make it that way can make other things jump to a state you don't want them in.
i was doing some grinding a few winters ago, while wearing a gortex jacket. flames? yep. scared the **** out of me. i still have the jacket, nice and melted
i was grinding out some bolts to remove an A crossmember from a 32 frame and was not paying attention, i started the garbage can that was 15 feet away on fire, it was a metal can, no biggie right, i opened the garage door, as it was winter, grab the can and got it half way out, set it down to change my grip, grabbed her again, hot damn, hit a hot spot on the garbage can, needless to say my foot made it go the rest of the way out of the garage and i headed for a snow bank and stuck my hand in it, damn, 4 finger tips one thumb and the whole palm of my hand was a huge blister, dumb dumb me, needless to say it wont happen again! jeff
My wife's brother was grinding his car's fender in the carport. Was a big explosion, and he and carport were sprayed with burning gasoline. He grabbed the hose, doused himself and carport, got into other car in driveway and laid on the horn. Woke up 2 days later in burn ward. 3rd degree burns almost everywhere not covered by his t-shirt and shorts. Fire dep't said sparks from the grinder apparently went into the nozzle of the gas can. Was about 1 gallon of gas in a 5-gallon can, 10 feet away on other side of tool boxes in middle of carport. He still works on cars. All flammables are in the shed.
YES I HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was grinding on my frame this summer and a few sparks caught the gr*** on fire in my back yard. Lucky I stopped to take a look because about a 8 ft. circle was burnt already. After watering it down my heart finally stopped racing and I decided to quit for the evening.
Same here...grinding away and felt extra warm, looked down and the shirt was a flame. I try to keep most of that stuff away during welding and grinding.
