Thought it might be fun to post a couple of images from the 36th Annual Oldies But Goodies Drags at Firebird Raceway in western Idaho over the June 4-5 weekend. Although it was blistering hot at this year's nostalgia event with temps in the mid-90's, it was still well attended in the show pits and the drag strip.
Finalists in the Supercharged Dragster Shootout captured by Greg Means (champ) over the "Guardian" of local hot rod builder Kenny Welch (runner-up).
Congrats to Scott White for winning the AA/Supercharged title with his `41 Willys coupe for the seconds straight year at Firebird.
Scott, glad everything went well at the Oldies. Sorry we didn't make it, Haven't got the engine in the club's 40 back together yet. Next year for sure. Mick
A bit west of Boise. Saw a few cool Funny Car shows in the early 70's at the place when I was a lad. Granted I was only 4-5 years old at the time but the "Fabulous Floppers" made a life long impression. Cool to see the '55 of Lonnie Gilbertson getting some track time in that first pic posted.
Thanks for posting. I grew up outside Boise, and along with the Nightfire Nationals, this is one of the things I truly miss. Looks like a good turnout this year.
Steve Matlock captured this Ford many years ago. Remarkably it still appears just as it did when an organized and approved drag race was staged on a road west of Boise called Glenwood in 1967 (just one year before Firebird opened up).
A new Gasser eliminator was introduced exclusively for straight axle early cars and it was met with a number of new entries including this Falcon of Ken Florey and the Henry J of Nick Smith (who operates Hot Rod Works with his brother in Nampa, Ida.). Lonnie Gilbertson won the class title after running 11.55, 11.55 and 11.55 - which was pretty amazing.
Rick Hale has been a long time supporter of the Hot Rod scene in western Idaho with a club he resurrected known as The Barons (which originated many decades ago). Rick is a familiar face with his wife Rosie at many area events including the Oldies Drags every year at Firebird Raceway.
Amber Rutherford not only drives a very swift 10-second Mustang, but also helps as crew chief for the AA/Supercharged `50 Ford coupe of her husband James, which is based out of Edmonton.
The dates for the 37th Oldies Drags at Firebird Raceway outside Boise, Idaho, will be June 3-4, 2017. Honestly, the only reason for releasing these dates this early is so that Mickey Ellis, Dale Hammon and the rest of the Stag's Club based out of Ogden, Utah, will have a full calendar year to get their famous 1940 Ford coupe tuned up and ready for next year's race. Cheers! Scott and the New Crew
