There was another couple driving through the fire .It was so hot it burned a lot of the paint off their car.Bruce.
Raiman, It happens so fast there wasnt much time to get it on the air. Wind speeds were clocked at 87 M.P.H. and blowing hot embers some more that a mile away starting more fires. Not much firemen could do with wind blowing at that speed. Bruce.
williebil, when I 1st moved here I worked at Mountian loft Resort for 3 years in Gatlinburg. I painted 3 vans for them and they liked me because no one knew how to plow snow up there .I was the snow truck plower. LOL. P.S.I still have a jacket from there I wear as a work jacket now.Bruce.
Falcongeorge, like I said before this all happen so fast no one had time to do much with the winds blowing at 87 M.P.H. People were trapped and had to get out fast. Thanks Bruce.
the37kid they have specialist up there fighting the fires and fire fighter as far away as Alaska have been flown in to help.Bruce.
Sorry to learn the miserable Goings-on there. Wishing everyone a better time ahead. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
O.K. guy update.Fires started springing up again in Cosby last night with the winds picking up. This morning around 6 A.M. here we got very heavy rain that should put those fires out. That tornado touched down in Athens west of us. On a sad note. My step son Justin was called out with his national guard unit to help fight the fires.Yesterday he called his mom and told her he had found 2 of the people that were killed in the fire up on Ski Mountian. When she questioned him about it he said he couldn't talk about it .He is still dealing with issues from coming back from his deployment over seas. Thats why I try and spend as much time as I can with him. He wants to learn about paint and body work so I am teaching him. He is going to help me with the 56 Chrysler Windsor I just got. Some of you might remember this picture of his 1st paint job on painting the roof wing on the Olds wagon. Here it is again. He is heading back up there today with his unit. Thanks to you all. Bruce.
Man, that's some scary shit going on there. Really glad to see you're still "on the air" this morning. It was the first thing I checked when I sat down this morning. If nothing else, I'm surprised you still have power anywhere in that area. How are things looking for you compared to yesterday?...better/worse? For those of us who don't know the area and don't know how far away the towns you talked about are....how close are they?
Good luck! The news has been showing the fire. Stay safe. Sent from my SM-G930T using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I can't help to wonder watching that dramatic video what happened to those people walking around about 20 seconds in..
I generally don't watch much "news" anymore (so much of it is complete bullshit and propaganda anyway) but they mentioned this on TV here last night. Thank god its started raining. We had some really big wildfires a few years ago, about 200 miles from here, but they didn't have such incredibly high winds, much more predictable as to direction and so on, that's why I was so shocked there wasn't more warning and earlier evacuation order. The house we are going to move to in a couple years is in heavy bush (mmmmmm, bush!), but theres a river on the back of my property between it and the really dense forest, when I was a kid, sometimes there were forest fires in the dead of summer, but they never crossed the river. I used to sit on the deck and watch the A26 Invaders and even a B24 Liberator dropping retardant. Its also so much wetter here in the PNW, close to the coast where we are, the fire season is very short and not very intense. We bitch about all the rain, but at the same time, its what makes this area so beautiful.
Hi Falcongeorge.Just a thought on the home that you are planning to move to.If it does`nt already have a metal roof, look into getting one.Could possibly lower your fire insurance rates. Good luck.Have fun Be safe. Leo
Hey Bruce, glad to see you're on the air this morning! Does it look like the worst is behind you at this point or didn't your area get enough rain? Just glad you're OK. May God bless your step son for his service to our country.
Thoughts and prayers for everyone in the area. My wife and I visited Gatlinburg and Smoky Mountain National Park a few year ago. A beautiful part of the country. Stay safe!
The REAL rains have not hit our area yet, just a light on and off sprinkle. God, we're hoping for some big rains here today.
Yes sir, living in this area is very beautiful and serene. Back in the 70's, when my 3 kids were small, we traveled the country during summer vacations, with our 454 Suburban and travel trailer .... and our wonderful dog, Malibu, an Alaskan Malamute. After seeing the beauty of this area, I vowed to live here, after retirement. 40 plus years later, here I am.
There was a lady on the news that was at a motel and was asleep when the call came to vacate the motel that burned to the ground, when she ran out no one was there and she didn't have a car and started running down the road she thought she was going to die as she ran into flames on both sides of the road, about that time she saw a car with two elderly ladys and they yelled for her to get in. she credits these women for saving her life.HRP
Bruce, I knew if you could make it through thanksgiving with your mother in law that you could hopefully make it through this too. And shake that young man's hand and tell him thanks from all of us.
Danny, they showed on the noon news here after that fire was put out on that sign a American flag was found untouched under the debri and the police officer that found it draped it over the sign.Good picture and people here. Bruce.
Not personnel property exactly, but I have a timeshare at Mountain Loft (or did I?) Anyway glad your safe and hope Gatilnburg will recover soon.
