Technical Firestone farm use vs regular tires.

The farm use only, not for highway use, not to exceed 25 mph is on there for a reason, and it’s all about liability.
In addition to that, there are technical reasons.
The bias ply tires are made of polyester/nylon cord of varying gauges, depending on load capacity.
This used to be the old ply rating (6,8,10 ply)
There is very little undertread, stiff sidewalls, no belt for penetration protection or tread stabilization, tread designs not intended for Highway use with no siping to p*** water off or give traction or cornering ability and tread compounds intended only for ground contact, not pavement.
The speed rating is to help control heat buildup from the internal friction of the diagonal bias ply construction. Cornering, tread scrub, pavement temperature only add to the heat issue..
Yeah, you may look period cool, and yeah they will see limited use, but it will likely be over 25 mph
so why take the chance, only because you wanted to save some coin?
It’s a failure waiting to happen. Not IF but WHEN.

There was a guy in my older brothers cl*** that had a 65 GTO with a 421, 4 speed. He would go to the towns International dealer machinery lot and steal farm tires. You could always tell his marks on the highway with the little stripe in the tread and he would drive 125 instead of 25. This was in a small farming town where I grew up.

 

Be glad you don’t live in Quebec where it’s the law to have DOT approved tires with the snowflake for the winter months. Lots of extra money but it makes sense where winter is 6 months long.

 

Uh . . . I actually ran implement tires on my Willys in the 60s! My future brother-in-law had them on his '55 Chevy and talked me into putting them on my death-trap first build of my Willys since they looked like racing slicks. I was a brainless 19 yr old, cut me some slack!! Anyway, they did ok for a while . . . . . until I tried driving them in the rain on the streets of Fresno CA. First time I put on the brakes firmly, car instantly switched directions. So, not only were they destined to disintegrate at speed, they provided a very convincing lesson on the usefulness of tire tread on p***enger car tires.

 

In the mid '70's I worked at a Mobil station. A local guy with a '68 Roadrunner came in for an oil change. While it was on the rack I did a once around to see if anything else needed work. I was shocked to see the front tires had "Union recapped in Tijuana, Mexico" on the side walls. And the guy drove the piss out of that car. Either he was very lucky or?

 

The date code on your farm tires is June 2013. So, yeah, 13 year old farm tires. What was your question again?

When I first seen post & tire's I thought maybe Farm use only was because tire tread purposes ,
But wasn't most tires
40- late 60's like that ?

People have become to comfortable auto's become to safe most have lost common sense !
Driving fast , tale geting @ any speed ,
Not using " 1 " length for every 10 mph. I am not that old growing up in Country
Driving big trucks , tractors ext
No front brake's some no rear .
Before in my teen's .

I think Interstates Hwy , Direct driving
Higher speed limits for long period
Time has made things more unsafe.
Better driving auto's , So called safety
Tie Technology , Air bag's
all these sensors in auto's maybe should have a default to switch to off for ignorance .
Maybe I lived in the sticks I do not recall
driving / riding to long of period of time over
55 in 70's also being pre teen .
about ever few miles stop sign ,
Traffic light town Left & right turn's .
I 95 is about 1/4 air miles away US1
Main rt DC to Richmond .
I think I-95 was 50 , 55 mph up until
2000 ish
I would think some where 80's
DOT was mandatory new Vehicles sold US with @ least a speed rating of 70 mph because Interstate speeds 70 in some states .
I remember working @ place that sold tire when Mustangs started making a come back Gt & 5.o's Goodyears
If you brought the car in for tires
It was policy Only able to sell
That speed rated tire or Higher
Many people shocked $180 ish each .
I think this is a standard to present day
If shop installs ,
Oem standards or higher

I think I would drive those tires or give a try Not driving over 55-60 for
mile's & mile's
I dove my 32 with tire that said
"" For Electric vehicle Only"
