I made a new firewall for my coupe and all I have are the two bolts at the top...so far. Are there supposed to be bolts going through the edge of the firewall/cowl to hold it in place down the sides? It wants to kick out at the bottom and I have clamps (not shown) holding it right now. I'm thinking about re installing the little original braces that go at the bottom and mount to the frame.
You will probably need to use your original feet or fabricate some for the bottom of the firewall, HRP
Original 32's had a rubber gasket between the firewall and body. The firewall bolted down to the frame with it's feet. The body was "clamped" around it with small eyes that had one bolt per side holding the cowl band to those dimpled holes in the top of the framerail. Nothing else holding the cowl band to the firewall. The two holes on the top were actually just for the hood hinge.
Thanks guys. It's been a looooong time since I took it apart. And it was channeled way back when. With no stocker to look at, I don't know what was original and what's not. I do have the seal installed. I'll have to study the "feet" mounting though. I'll have to make some bosses that stick out from the frame to mount the original feet to. Or make new ones. If I make the bosses, I may not be able to get the (channeled) body over them. It'll take some study. The firewall was made from 16 ga (about .060") sheet. Search "Chelsea Auto Parts Coupe" for my build page. I couldn't figure out how to put the link in my tag line.
You might be able to drill holes in the frame and fabricate a "L" type brace that bolts to the firewall positioned a half inch or so above the frame that will draw down the firewall to the frame as you tighten the bolts. HRP
I was just wondering about how high they should be from the frame to pull down tight. Wait, are they attached to the firewall or cowl? I would think the cowl so it would pull the body down onto the firewall. Yeah, I remember drilling them off the cowl. They were still there, but I don't think they were bolted to anything. I don't know how they sealed it up. The body was bolted to the underside of the frame. The firewall was cut (sectioned), maybe they installed the body and cut the firewall a little tall. Damn, I wish I'd taken more pics. BTW, I got the link in my signature now.
the bolt that holds the body down and seals the rubber gasket to the firewall on top of the firewall goes through the cast iron L shaped piece attached to the body. It goes through this bracket and in to the frame on a slight angle to seal the cowl to the body. The bracket has no bolt in it at the bottom of the body facing the frame in this picture. This is the odd hole on the edge of a stock a stock Deuce. it pulls the body down and in to get this seal
I found this old photo of when I was building my old '32 pickup,,it might give you some idea of how the feet are attached. HRP
OK, we're talking about two different things. I see the "legs" your talking about. The cast pieces shown in Tommy's pic is what I was talking about. Thanks guys.
